My father-in-law started with the Santa Fe and was bought out a millionaire at 45 with the merger. My brother-in-law just retired from the Burlington Northern with enough pension to live any life he and his wife want to live. All of this was because of a union you describe as a mafia.

The middle class of this country was created by unions. The last 30 years, when wages have stagnated, is because of the destruction of unions in this country by right-wing forces. It was this lack of unions that caused the lack of upward pressure on wages they provided. Sometimes the only way management will listen to workers if they are mafia. But if you don't want to work with a union then you should work in a non-union shop--I don't agree with people being forced to join a union. At the same time if you don't want to be in a union you don't deserve the wages, benefits, or the upward pressure on real wages they provide. While most of the American workers saw their wages stagnate my inlaws saw their wages stay well ahead of the cost of living curve. Why? Because of unions!

Maybe if they stopped funding political parties and spent the money on protecting workers. Railroad workers would be better off. If I recall correctly most RR workers make north of 30.00 per hour not counting benefits from day one.

Of course not. They also shouldn't be forced to accept the pay labor unions provide, nor the benefits, nor the cost of living raises, nor any of the other benefits labor unions provide.

My suggestion if you want nothing to do with unions then find nonunion work somewhere and enjoy the wondrous benefits of working where you are at the mercy of management. Enjoy!

When I worked in an employee capacity, I never joined a union and never had a problem. Good raises, bonuses, benefits, promotions, etc...

My best friend did join a union, however, and they screwed him royally to the point that he had to take them to court to get them to fulfill their end of the contract.

You lefties continually put out this BS that every employer is out to screw his/her/their workers every chance they get, and only a union can protect them. That's got to have something to do with Democrats, The Party of Corruption®, having long been a major recipient of union campaign donations.

Every company I ever worked for both compensated and promoted based on merit (asset value). If you did good work they took care of you, if you goofed off they first tried to motivate you and if that didn't work, hasta la bye bye.

But wait! I think I know where you're coming from, there, Peter -- you're speaking from personal experience, as one of those lazy employees whose job performances are at best tepid, who work for local government or other civil service and can't get fired because of the union, right?

Aha! Got you pegged!

NO! It's why our kids are stupid, you can't get rid of bad teachers. Merit should be the only reason to keep your job. The VA and most civil service jobs didn't have a lot of problems until civil service deleted the ten-point advantage vets used to get. It seems related to me.

================
No, most especially for government employees. Fact of the matter is for Federal, State, and local government employees, they are forced to join.
I think for private industries, labor union could be justified. Sometimes they could be abused too like the AUW Auto workers.

There are various types of labor unions on various government sectors.
They are very strong with the support of the Democrat-Socialist Party.
Dues being charged from employees are donated to he democrat campaign funds, Then the democrats use taxpayers money when labor union demands salary increases and benefits for their employees. In other words the money going to fund the democrat party comes from the taxpayers, republicans or democrats.

For state employees, the democrat elected government raise property taxes every year to fund their employees salaries and benefits, demanded by labor unions. They donate substantial amount to the democrat party. Notice that all states run by democrats they have very high property taxes. California, NYC, Chicago, NJ, Washington State, and many others.

NO ! I've worked in both union and non-union shops and there's a stark difference. In my first non-union job at age 17 I made a suggestion to the shop owner and his response was to offer to pay my way through college to get an engineering degree. But as a typical teen I was too 'smart' and declined. In my next non-union shop again I made a suggestion which resulted in my given Carte Blanche to work any Saturday I wished to do 'wh**ever I felt needed to be done'. I also received 3 raises in one day. In my first union job I received my union card and my layoff slip on the same day. During my next union job I witnessed the union president pocket a thick envelope from the factory owner and then give us a speech about how he 'told off the owner and everything will be taken care of'. I heard their conversation, they talked about golf. This union president later became a state senator.

Many of work places that have mixed union and nonunion workers, will generally hire non-union workers at least until they have enough non-union workers to defang the leverage of the union. Even if they have union members, the threat of strike is eliminated. A union without this power has no leverage to negotiate better deals for their members.
