Black molds are serious. They generally infest damp areas. They can be hard to eliminate.

I had seen documentaries on various animals who were adapting to the radiation in that general area, but this goes far beyond that. I would think that this mold would be well worth having it's DNA mapped. Research on how this mold can live in this environment might lead to medical breakthroughs.

Absolutely...

And I imagine there would be applications to space travel as well...

The Chernobyl disaster might yet yield valuable knowledge in terms of treating radiation sicknesses. As far a space travel, if you could take genes from this mold and put them into food plants or even algae, you might find ways of growing food, or recycling waste on long flights. Or maybe one day a Martian Colony.

A Martian Colony would be a great cooperative future project for Russia, China, and the US. Perhaps 30 years from now.
