Genesis chapter 39

Verse 1 - 6

Joseph was sold to Potiphar, an Egyptian officer in Pharaoh’s army. Joseph works in Pharaoh’s house. God was with Joseph and blesses Egypt because of him. Pharaoh can see this and is glad to have Joseph.

Verse 7 - 12

Pharaoh’s wife wants an affair with Joseph. Joseph knows how he started out and who is behind his success. An affair could get him killed. Pharaoh’s wife is persistent. One day Joseph and Pharaoh’s wife are home alone. She grabs Joseph’s clothes and asks him to have sex. Joseph leaves the clothes and flees naked.

Verse 13 - 20

There was a problem. It is not hard to see a naked man. She has to get ahead of this. She says Joseph came to her for sex and when she screamed he took off his robe and fled. This doesn’t make sense. Why would you take off your clothes before you ran? Joseph would have been killed if Pharaoh really believed his wife.

Verse 21 - 23

God will never leave or forsake you. He is with us in the fiery furnace in the boat on the storm tossed sea.
