About preventative burns, they did a massive one in front of my place 3 months before the fire, didn't make any difference.
If you expand the picture just in front of the opposite mountain there is a green strip which was a preventative burn, the air is still smoky after 25 days since the fire.

The proper way to do it is in squares the smaller the better about 1 mile square should be the biggest to protect habitat and reduce fuel, but that is not practical so corridors of up to 20 miles and half to 2 miles wide are done at intervals, when the fire reaches a previous corridor it is easily contained under ideal climate conditions.

We did all that but the wind and heat made it irrelevant, although there were places where animals could shelter so it wasn't a dead loss.
