We are overdue for another mass extinction. We have created a technology that is invisible without our technology to view it. Perhaps those creatures that inherit what we leave behind will ultimately achieve what we seem unable to accomplish.

Personally, I'm rooting for the cats.

4 million years ago an ape split off from his Chimpanzee brothers and decided to conquer the world. The question is will those apes left behind decide to take over once their more talkative brothers have left the scene ? I am guessing, no.

For cats to fill the void they would have to become more social. The only major social cats are lions, who hunt in p***es. Canines operate in packs but lacking hands or the equivalent, they will never go very far. I am thinking rodents could do it. Rats and squirrels are very intelligent and have good dexterity with their front paws.

My favorite is the raccoon. They are smart, have good dexterity, and already come with a mask, which is invaluable if they start a political system.

Note in the 1st graph how much atmospheric CO2 is natural vs human caused.

The 2nd graph shows the glacial and interglacial global temperatures for the past 450,000 years. Note that LOOONG before the industrial revolution the earth had global temperatures well above today and even above our peak temperatures in the 1990s.

And finally the compare the extent of the Arctic icecap from 2012 to 2013. The Arctic ice sheets have been expanding over most of the Arctic for several years with the exception of Greenland. Why not Greenland? Could the geothermal hot spot under Greenland have anything to do with it? The Iceland hot spot which caused the volcanic activity which created Iceland has grown a magma plume extending under Greenland.

As I understand it it's not CO2 we need to worry about, plant which produce O love it, but CO. The air we breathe is made up of more nitrogen than CO2 or O and yet we do just fine. Our air is probably cleaner than any country on Earth with exception to some located in isolated Oceans and even then if they are located east of Asia maybe not so much. Mike

Nope. Check the charts. In the summer the amount of arctic ice the last few years is only about 60% of what it was in 1980 however, in the winter it averages about 92% of what is was in 1980. In other words the ice that appears to have disappeared in the summer is right back where it belongs in the winter.

According to Nasser Arctic sea ice was 8 million square kilometers in 1980 now it's about half that, the graph shows it goes up and down but the trend is down at 12•85 % sea ice lost each decade.

It is a Divine judgment I saw it myself in the bush fire only 3 things got saved at my place, my solar panels separate from the house which was the second thing and a small garage for my motor bike which is now registered so I must be telling the t***h as my life goes on as normal so I can continue doing that from the Holy Mountain which is Mt. Skanzi.

Glad to hear that you are doing your part. I have a few more than that and I am now, apparently, running the neighborhood feeding station. According to my trail cam, I am feeding a dozen or so outside (not including possums) and have 8 inside.

Cats are actually quite social creatures. They tend to be solitary in the wild because food choices are not that plentiful or easily attained. People who own multiple cats will tell you they are not the solitary, aloof creatures of lore.

My experience with cats, and I have had more than 20 in the last 30 years, is that a cat will mirror your behavior to it. If you are aloof, your cat will be also. If you are open and receptive to the cat's behavior, you will find that they are attentive and affectionate.

Five little kittens were born under my garden shed a year ago. Something happened to their mother because at about 6 weeks of age, they were out looking for food. One was starved to the point it could no longer eat on its own and the other four were too small to feed themselves successfully. My wife and I started feeding them and eventually captured the sickly one. He went straight to the vet and we managed to pull him through in spite of the vet writing him off as lost. A few weeks later, we captured the rest of them, had all of them neutered and they became house cats.

If any one of them gives out a cry of fear, the other four come running from every corner of the house to the aid of the one calling. They have formed a kind of protection racket against the other cats.

Two of them insist on lap time with me constantly. Three of my cats suffer separation anxiety. They move to a window where they can see my office in the back yard and stay there, often howling, until I come back in. I've read several places that tell me cats don't experience separation anxiety. Believe me, I know differently.

Anyway, cats are full of surprises and frequently violate the stereotypes. A cat family and a cat community are quite different from a one or two cat pet situation.
