I always thought the decade began with the year 1 as in 2001, 2011, 2021, etc. Just like the century's begin with 1, 1901, 2001, since there was no year "0". We went from B.C.E. 1 to C.E. 1. Or, if you must, BC 1 to AD 1. 2020 is actually the 20th year of the the 21st century or the end of the 2nd decade of the 21st century. The first century went from January 1, 1 to December 31, 100. Everyone celebrated the turn of the century one year early. Sorry.
This.is me trying to be smart...The word "century" comes from the Latin "centuria", meaning a group of 100...The first year "0" would not have been counted, but from then on, would need that zero to complete a hundred. Man,this makes my head hurt...I could Google an explanation, but that's no fun.
