While looking on the web for items about Christmas it dawned on me that Christmas has multiple facets of celebrations. There is the First one the Mass for Christ. Then there is the secular Christmas with Santa Clause and all that. The date of Christmas has several origins. December 25 was picked for a variety of reasons. It is doubtful that December was the time of the birth of the Christ child. Taxation probably required registration at the beginning the new year which for Jews was in early spring. Also Shepard’s rarely took sheep to the hills for feeding during the snowy winter months. Celebration for other gods took place around the 25 of December, so people were in the habit of celebrating that time of year.
So Christmas has become a Christian holiday, a religious holiday, and a secular holiday. For many it is all three
