The Friday after Thanksgiving is referred to as Black Friday. Retailer’s offer many specials, and stores are crowded.
It was originally called Black Friday because the volume of shoppers created traffic accidents and sometimes even violence. ... In his ad, he said, "'Black Friday' is the name that the Philadelphia Police Department gave to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. It is not a term of endearment for them
Black Friday later became known in print, after an advertisement was published in The American Philatelist magazine in 1966. By the late 1980s, the term was commonly known across the nation and retailers soon linked it to their post-Thanksgiving sales

It is actually called Black Friday because it is often the first day of the year retailers are profitable or “in the black” as opposed to “in the red”

White Friday is the first Friday of the Winter season when the snow is at least 2 inches deep, and you have to get out the shovel and clear the drive so you can get the kids to the school bus stop, or drive to work. You are acquainted with the concept of work aren't you?

Come one TrueAmerican, PeterS doesn't have to know what he's talking about. He's a liberal and therefore better than us.

Actually, Kevyn is right. It may be the first t***h coming from a lefty, but he is right. Retailers work in the red most of the year until sales spike after Thanksgiving. They make enough money after Thanksgiving through the Christmas shopping season to move into the black for the year. Retailers who fail to go into the black after Thanksgiving, close in January. So malls are dotted with closed stores in January.
