China also sends it's criminals off to various facilities that aren't prisons and also aren't discussed.

I'm sure ol' Vladimir's got a few similar facilities left over from the Soviet days as well. The Russians also have a penchant for taking certain criminals out into a forest, forcing them to dig a grave and then shooting them in the back of the head so they fall right in.

Wouldn't you expect the incarceration rate to be highest in the USA? I certainly would. The more freedom available to the population, the greater the number of infractions will be.

It has to do with the attitude with which children are raised. In a highly restrictive society, stern and inflexible upbringings are mandatory to protect your children from the potential harm to them from violating social norms. The more freedom available to the population, the more relaxed are the rules for raising children and the greater the chances of running afoul of the law.

Could you clarify your numbers please. Considering the line I highlighted, they make no sense.

Good point. That would indicate that over two million Americans are incarcerated for every hundred thousand of us.

Which would be a pretty interesting piece of math.

Thank you, I tend to see things rather literally, so it was confusing.

We also have a lot of drug related crime in America, speaking for the west coast alone and not a new problem, there are meth and crack as the major drugs, in the Midwest and on the east coast heroin and crack.

Gang violence in our major cities and then the less "thought about" crimes like felony fraud, forgery, embezzlement, pilferage and the like.

Poverty related crimes like shoplifting, purse snatching, mugging, strongarm robbery and various types of breaking & entering and) or trespassing.

Misdemeanors turned serious by failure to appear (contempt of court) bench warrants, or failure to report for community service or probation violation.

Murder, attempted murder, battery, extortion, rape, sex with a minor, sex trafficking, prostitution...

...DUI, hit-&-run, grand theft auto, resisting arrest, the list goes on and on, most of the above happening multiple times, daily, in cities across the country.

Still, you're right, the number seems a bit high even though it's probably not, at least not these days...

From personal experience In can attest that a large number of crimes go uninvestigated in China... And those that are are often subject to bribery or influence before they get to court...Or after...

It should be noted that China has a tendency to execute criminals within a year or two of sentencing them... I believe the number of executions last year was around 5000...Over a twenty year period that would knock about 100,000 off the list...

Here there aren't many executions, those that are in the form of lethal injection.

There's also a higher recidivism rate than there was once upon a time because of such "liberal" concepts as "prisoners' rights." Many criminals are simply not as worried about returning to prison as they once were.

The Trump Administration has introduced prison reforms that include occupational training and t***sitional help to aid convicts in rejoining society with a shot at earning an honest living, which is a lot more practical than just tossing them out the door without any kind of legitimate game plan.
