What is a kinsman redeemer and why does it matter?

WHAT IS A KINSMAN REDEEMER?
• In the OT, a kinsman-redeemer was a male relative who, according to various laws of the Pentateuch, had the responsibility to act on behalf of a relative who was in trouble, danger, or need of vindication.
• The Hebrew verb ga’al is rendered by such terms as "redeemer" or "near relative" and has been translated to mean "kinsman-redeemer" and "avenger of blood" designating one who:
o Delivers or rescues (Genesis 48:16; Exodus 6:6)
o Redeems property or a person (Leviticus 25:47–55; 27:9–25)
o Avenges the murder of a relative as a guiltless executioner (Num 35:9-34)
o Marries the widow of a family member who died without an heir (Genesis 38:8; Deuteronomy 25:5-6).
 In human terms from the OT, the kinsman-redeemer who redeems and marries the widow a family member who died without an heir is illustrated most clearly in the book of Ruth, where the kinsman-redeemer is Boaz.

WHY DOES MAN NEED A GA’AL?
• Man needs deliverance, rescue, and redemption from being a slave to sin (Romans 6:23; John 8:34; Romans 6:16).
• Man needs redemption of the property (Earth) given to him by God because he has given dominion of it to Satan due to the fall of man (Genesis 1:26; John 12:31).
• Man needs a guiltless avenging executioner because he has been murdered by Satan and is dead in his sin (John 8:44; Ephesians 2:1).
• Man needs a redeemer because no one can keep the Law fully due to the imputed sin of Adam. Therefore God, in wrath against sin, judges all who disobey and there are no heirs to the kingdom, (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23a).

HOW DOES JESUS QUALIFY AS OUR GA’AL?
• Four qualifications of the Law of the Kinsman Redeemer (Leviticus 25:47-49):
o He must be a Kinsman: The redeemer must be related to the one whom he is going to buy back out of slavery (to sin). Jesus became a blood relative (Hebrews 2:14).
o He must be free himself: A slave was unable to purchase another slave. Jesus himself was free of the debt (death) and of the bondage (sin) which had fallen on the one (man) who was to be redeemed (Romans 7:14).
o He must be able to pay the price: Jesus was not born of Adam’s seed (virgin birth) and therefore was not himself a slave to sin (2 Corinthians 5:21).
o He must be willing to pay the price: It was not enough for Jesus to be able to accomplish the work of redemption. He was also be willing to make the sacrifice of paying the price (John 10:17-18; 1 John 3:16).

WHAT WERE THE RESULTS OF JESUS’ DEATH & RESURRECTION CONCERNING BEING OUR GA’AL?
• Anyone who confess’ Jesus and believes in their heart that God raised Him from the dead will be delivered from being a slave to sin (Romans 10:9-10, 13; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 4:6-7).
• Jesus will redeem the property (Earth) given to Man by God (John 12:31).
• Jesus will avenge Satan’s murders of those who were dead in sin (Revelation 20:10, 14).
• In a type of the Jewish wedding illustrated in the Book of Ruth, by believing in Jesus, He will be our bridegroom and us His bride, and we will become heirs to the kingdom (Revelation 19:7-8).

CONCLUSION
So why did Jesus do all this? I will never be able to understand but despite how wicked we are He stilled loved us and was willing to do what He did for us on the cross to save us.

Two verses from the Bible demonstrate this:
Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” John 10:11
Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

Here is one more reason that Christ became flesh and joined the human race. It is so that He might be tempted as we are tempted. That He might suffer as we suffer.

Jesus didn’t just come to earth and then die. He also went through all the hurts and the pains and the testing that are part of life. He suffered bodily hunger. He suffered the grief of the death of a loved one. He suffered the betrayal of a friend. He suffered the taunts of his enemies. He suffered the temptations of Satan. Because He suffered all these things, He is able to understand and empathize with our sufferings and our temptations.

Are you going through hard times? Jesus understands. He has been there. He went through those same kinds of experiences. He knows how to help. We don’t have a God who is indifferent to our daily problems. We have a God who is intimately acquainted with our problems. We have a God who has been there. He has hurt where we hurt. He has cried where we cry. He has been tempted where you we tempted.

And, because of that, He is able to help. And He wants to because He loves you.

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
