Gordon Sondland Home Renovations Cost US Taxpayers $1 Million

Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union and a central figure in the House impeachment inquiry of President Trump, is overseeing a nearly $1 million renovation of his government-provided residence, paid for with taxpayer money.

Upon arriving in Brussels, he quickly became disappointed with his accommodations and, after unsuccessfully arguing to move to a new residence, began proposing renovations.

So, we give him a salary with overseas pay, a clothing allowance, a car and driver, he lives rent free and now we will finance $400,000 in kitchen renovations, nearly $30,000 for a new sound system and $95,000 for an outdoor “living pod” with a pergola and electric heating, LED lighting strips and a remote-control system, government procurement records show.

It's not his home. It is US Govt. property. It is called the Ambassador's residence.

The Government pays $8,000.00 for a hammer, $12,000.00 for a crash resistant coffee pot. The total sounds reasonable within those parameters.

Isn't this the same guy who got his job by giving 1 million dollars to Trump's inauguration? Maybe he just wanted to get his money back. I'm sure Trump would understand.

And nice ad-hominem--trying to discredit Sondland before he speaks. But shame on you anyway. You should know that it's what the Ambassador says that's important not who paid for his renovation. Did they teach you to use logical fallacies in genius school or did you pick that up by being a Conservative?

Won't the next ambassador have use of the location as well?

Seems rather wasteful of taxpayer money...But the government in general is rather wasteful...

How has he performed over in the EU? I can't imagine it has been easy for him...

Answer to your first question...not necessarily. Ambassadors and senior ranking officials are offered a choice in housing. Depending on rotation and available homes. But, the house belongs to the host country and are leased to the US, so the host country can take the house off the available list when the current contract expires,

It is a high price tag when considering the average restoration and replacing furniture is $500K.

I do not have information on his duty performance. Sorry.

Hello, he has had his special "mission" in the Ukraine that has been occupying him, the point being that he actually has no business there as there was a full compliment of people there who actually knew the country and what they were doing before Giuliani got rid of them for not playing with the personal agenda.

Hmmm... I can see the concern...

I agree... The government could be more frugal with taxpayer money...

Once an entitled rich fool, always an entitled rich fool. This is what we get for allowing Presidents to reward donors with diplomatic posts that they are woefully under qualified for. This stupid practice has been going on for over 200 years.

In that case, give him little more than a hut. I never heard of him until this week.
