“The effort is to enter the rest.” (Heb4:11) “Resting in me you shall be saved.” (Is30:15) Be still...
Why strive for improvement when “to be still” is to know God? Think about it.
Paul said “have no boast”: that is the quintessential understanding of Christ's message. If we resist temptation seemingly successfully, we can boast. If we do good despite some small or great adversity, we can boast. Where it is not a boast is when it is not of our own will and effort achieved. Will has one position and purpose: submission. Let spirit and grace do the work; their understanding and strength are greater than ours. It takes the light of God to discern bone from marrow, soul from spirit, the finite from the eternal, which is beyond our powers of comprehension.
Such a thing as self-defense can be of the soul (our mortal need or fear) or of the spirit (for the sake of another). Impossible to tell. The soul is our earthly base. It is not, of course, to be minimized or ignored. But it is not to dictate. To worry about our children is natural and not to be dismissed by 365 various cautions in Scripture to “fear not.” That would be wrong. Yet what we may do about such worry can be worrisome. This is where spirit and grace comfort and guide. ..within our human experience.
