Can Government Employee Be Impeached after Leaving Office?

Democrats may have opened a big can of worms. So, what is the point if the person is already gone....to prevent them from holding future office in the Federal government. Meaning if biden is impeached for blackmailing the Ukraine (among other things he did) he will never sit in the Oval Office as President or even hold a GS1 clerical position. If the Ukraine government comes back to say he pressured the firing of the prosecutor, the House will have to impeach him and the Senate, to save face with the world, will have to punish. Since he is not in office, they would need to bar him from holing a Federal job...but, could they also strip his retirement under "profit"?

"The Senate shall have the sole power to try all impeachments. When sitting for that purpose, they shall be on oath or affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no person shall be convicted without the concurrence of two thirds of the members present.

Judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States: but the party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to indictment, trial, judgment and punishment, according to law."

From what I have read, impeaching an ex-official is probably possible but highly unlikely. Criminal charges can always be brought within the statute of limitations.

Why would impeachment be better than an indictment?

It has never been done. I guess my mind is in hyper drive tonight and sleep seems a billion years into the future. So, doing an exercise in logic, what if the Ukraine government comes back with a blackmail possibility...this becomes an international issue. Would the 5 year US Statue of Limitation apply? Now taking this a further step, because biden says he took the action with the knowledge and approval of obama, could he be impeached as a coconspirator?

Nice scenario if it would go in that direction.
A few others thrown in, John Kerry for one.

Let's just indict them all, including the two current P**********l office holders, and let a jury decide once and for all. I'm tired of people being indicted, tried and convicted in the media................and P**********l tweets and news conferences.

It seems that the last 45 years has been one side or the other clamoring for impeachment and removal of a duly elected president. Basically, when citizens realized that President Nixon would escape punishment, we, as a nation, split and have been at political war ever since. We see nothing good being accomplished because your (regardless of party) elected officials lies and is not interested in the poor and middle class, is rich or getting rich by supporting the top 10 percent (who actually pay the lion's share of taxes), and the complaints go on regardless of which party is in control. Funny how we elect to turn blind eyes to our party's mistakes or outright abuse of power but get hung up on a tweet. Perhaps it is time to elect a completely pious person and because that is an oxymoron.....let us elect a computer who will always say what is PC, never use a twitter account and never suffer a brain fart. We seem to have issues with every human that holds an elected position, especially as President of the USA.

I would like to see all US citizens take a week off of their soap box....take a look at other presidents or PMs, they would be shocked to learn that we actually have a good life, a president who is trying hard, and our standard of living outpaces 80 percent of all developed nations.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/201 Section 4 Accepting a bribe/ influence peddling

If Obama benefitted from Biden's actions, then he is culpable to the same degree. Again, impeachment is unlikely but the violation of influence peddling/bribery is a criminal act and can result in indictment; if convicted, up to three times the amount of the bribe and 15 years in prison.

What I wonder is does this run retro-actively. In other words the billions that he s**mmed he'll now have to repay.
