We need monsters

We invent some superlative evil, liberal or conservative, so that in comparison we are superlatively righteous, conservative and liberal, respectively. This invention cannot be sincere and simply mistaken or simply of a legitimate differing point but a demon of purposeful evil intent, downright stupidity, or an automaton controlled by party or leadership. That the extremist on the Left and Right all use the same descriptors about their opposites demonstrates the flaw in their own character: the need for an enemy to fight. Then we are not just engaged in a complex debate of ideas but knights fighting d**gons, or more to the reality, Van Helsing seeking to find and slay vampires.

Once engaged in this self-created myth, it is nearly impossible to give it up and return to the common place, practical world of give and take that is politics. Not simply because of the loss of the excitement and sense of superiority that is central to the battle but because we have made it a conflict between good and evil, and thus to be reasonable and civil in debate, look for compromise, is t*****rous.

We invent some superlative evil, liberal or conser... (show quote)

Good and evil are absolutes. If good compromises that means evil then infects good. I choose good and do not want to allow evil ( liberalism ) to infect good.

The point is that liberal and conservative views are meant to work together for the common good, avoiding the damaging extremes of either being dominant. Neither is inherently good or evil but each contributes to the Big Picture necessary contrasts and coloring vital to the best understanding of policies and events.

This was originally the intention. All would work together using reason and logic to attempt to reach some common ground that everyone could live with. But the left has become so radical and destructive to our American values and way of life that to give in to the left only invites more misery for all of us. Because of the actions of the radical left and its promotion of class division and r****m the country has become sorely divided. Not to mention the lefts' promotion of big govt. rule.

Well stated. I see that some here still don't get it. It's a little amusing and very disheartening.
