The unidentified driver was the only visible occupant inside the vehicle when it pulled up to the Interstate Highway 35 (IH-35) checkpoint north of Laredo on Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement.
A canine alerted border agents to the odors of concealed humans or narcotics from inside the trailer during a primary inspection of the vehicle, the CPB said. Upon further examination, agents said they discovered 53 migrants from Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, who were "all illegally present in the United States."
The temperature inside the trailer was recorded at 105 degrees at the time of the discovery, though no one required medical attention, according to the CPB.
Agents arrested the U.S. citizen and all 53 i*****l i*******ts, who they said would be "processed accordingly." Border Patrol seized the tractor-trailer.
It was unclear whether the driver is facing charges, but investigators called the incident a "human smuggling attempt." Homeland Security Investigations is handling the case.
So the "cargo" will get deported, but what about the driver? What should his punishment be? I think he should spend a year in jail for each illegal he t***sported into the USA.

Picking up hitchhikers is a misdemeanor at worst.

If the driver was nationalized, then yes it is possible. However, if he was born in the USA, then no, the US can not strip him of birthright citizenship.

So, he picked up hitchhikers and put them all in the cargo area of his truck. Interesting take on smuggling i******s into the USA.
Section 274(a)(2) makes it a crime to, knowingly or in reckless disregard of the fact that the person lacks prior official authorization to enter or live in the U.S., bring or attempt to bring that person into the country. (A failed crime is still a crime under this section.) In this case, it doesn’t even matter whether the person brings the noncitizen to an official entry point or not. Attempting to smuggle someone through a checkpoint in the trunk of one's car would be prosecuted under this section. Penalties can include a fine under Title 18 of the U.S. Code, a prison term of up to one year, or both. Again, the penalties can be multiplied by the number of violations. And, if he took money from these people....fine and up to 19 years for each instantiation.

Were these people to be used as s***e labor?
I like the idea of one year for each person. If he can’t be put to work helping to build the wall he can pick up trash. Put him to work.

So, he picked up a truck and did not check to insure what he was paid to deliver was actually in the truck? Every trucker I have ever met, checks the inventory and makes sure the cargo does not shift during t***sport. They also check "load balance."
Quote from CMV manual "Drivers are responsible for determining whether cargo has been properly located, distributed, and secured in or on the commercial motor vehicle, and they must be familiar with methods and procedures for securing the cargo in or on the vehicles they drive. They are responsible for inspecting the cargo and the cargo securement devices and systems when not impractical at the beginning of the trip and at certain times during the trip.
Drivers must know the working load limit of load securement devices and the proper number and placement of each device depending on the dimensions, weight, and specific requirements of each type of commodity. Drivers must ensure loads are secured in a manner that will prevent the load from leaking, spilling, blowing, or falling from or within the vehicle."
Next excuse?
