For almost ten years I have conducted extensive and intensive research into not only the 9/11 attacks but also into the history of radical Islam.

Prior to 9/11, I had very little knowledge of the Muslim religion, I knew of course that there were Muslims in the middle east, but as far as I was concerned they had their thing and I didn't really care what that might be. Then when the attacks came on 9/11 and we learned within just a few days that Islamic terrorists were the suspected perpetrators, I grew quite curious about just what in God's name made these people tick. So, I began my own research.

As time passed, I read the 9/11 Commission Report, the NIST investigation, the FEMA reports, and wh**ever I could find in FBI archives and elsewhere. As extensive as it all was, I wasn't completely satisfied with what I had learned and this inspired me to go even deeper. So I began looking into Islam itself. As a starting point, I read quite a bit of the Qu'ran and other Islamic scripture. I discovered the Qu'ran prohibits Muslims from committing suicide, so I wondered what in world inspired Muslims to k**l themselves in executing such a terrible act of terrorism.

Then I came across the name Sayyid Qutb and the picture completely changed. Things began to clear up a bit. Qutb was an Egyptian author, poet, journalist and teacher who was an outspoken critic of the Muslim world and he voiced an intense disapproval of the United States which he saw as materialistic, and obsessed with violence and sexual pleasures. To confirm his feelings about America, he came here in 1949, spent two years working and studying in Washington DC and Colorado. When he returned to Egypt in 1951, he was thoroughly radicalized.

Qutb then put all of his writing and journalistic sk**ls to work in expounded the concept of violent Jihad. He usurped the teachings of the Qu'ran and began a campaign for Pure Islam. His writings, pamphlets, and speeches inspired many young Muslims with the doctrines of martyrdom and terrorism to achieve that goal. Among them were Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri. In fact he befriended these two men among others. One of those young Muslims inspired by Qutb and bin Laden was Mohammed Atta, the field commander of the 9/11 attacks. ,

Considered the god father of the Muslim Brotherhood, Qutb's efforts bore fruit, poisonous though it was, and violent Islamic fundamentalism was born. The foremost goal in Qutb's mind was to take down the secular government of Egypt and replace it with a purely Islamic theocracy much like that of the Iranian regime. Qutb called all true Muslims to jihad, or Holy War, against jahiliyya—which is to say, against modernity, which America so powerfully represents.

This philosophy led to Qutb’s execution in 1966. Proud to the end, he refused to accept the secular Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser’s offer of mercy in exchange for Qutb’s repudiation of his jihad. Nasser may have silenced a critic, but the martyrdom of Sayyid Qutb accelerated his movement. The same year the philosopher was hanged, the teenage al-Zawahiri formed his first violent cell, dedicated to the o*******w of the Egyptian government and the creation of an Islamist state.

At the conclusion of his book "The America I have seen" Qutb wrote, “Humanity makes the gravest of errors and risks losing its account of morals, if it makes America its example.” In other words, he pinned a bulls eye on the United States.

Qutb's writings and his martyrdom heavily influenced bin Laden, al-Zawahiri and many other now radicalized Muslims into their terrorist campaigns to punish, even destroy, not only the United States but any secular government running a Muslim country.
