Feast of Trumpets - Seeking the Truth

Rosh HaShanah – The Feast of Trumpets

The Biblical Basis

There are five passages in the Hebrew Scriptures that speak of this feast. However, it is not mentioned at all in the New Testament but it will be discussed in the Messianic implication since there is an application that directly refers to the Feast.

1. Leviticus 23:23-25 Instructional

2. Numbers 29:1-6 Instructional

3. Psalm 81:3-4 Instructional

4. Ezra 3:1-6 Historical

5. Nehemiah 8:1-12 Historical

The next annual festival of YHVH’s (the LORD’s) festivals as found in Lev 23:23-25

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. ‘You shall do no customary work on it; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD.’" (Leviticus 23:23-25 NKJV throughout unless noted)

The blowing of the trumpets is to remind them that "I am the Lord your God".

‘And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets. (Numbers 29:1)

A special season known as Teshuvah, which in Hebrew means "to return or repent," begins on the first day of the month of Elul and continues 40 days, ending with the Day of Atonement. Thirty days into Teshuvah, on Tishrei l, comes the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh HaShanah). This begins a final ten-day period beginning on The Feast of Trumpets and ending on Atonement. These are known as the Awesome Days (the days of awe). The Sabbath that falls within this ten-day period is called the Sabbath of Return. Each morning during the 30 days of the month of Elul, the trumpet or ram's horn is blown to warn the people to repent and return to God.

Teshuvah speaks to all people. Those who believe in the Messiah are called to examine their lives and see where they have departed from God. It is a call to examine the Scriptures and the evidence that the Messiah was who He said He was.

God has always had a heart to warn people before He proclaims judgment. God warned the people before the flood, and He warned Nineveh before it was ruined. He does not want anyone to receive the wrath of His judgment [Zephaniah 2:1-3]; [2 Peter 3:9].

The whole month of Elul is a 30-day process of preparation through personal examination and repentance for the coming High Holy Days. The shofar (or rams horn) is blown after every morning service. There are idioms or phrases that help us identify the days in the season of Teshuvah (repentance). Just as unfamiliar foreigners may be confused when they hear Americans call Thanksgiving Day, "Turkey Day" or "Pilgrims' Day," non-Jewish believers in Yeshua (Jesus) can be confused by the different terms for the major feasts of YHVH (the LORD).

Some different names for the Feast of Trumpets:

Teshuvah (repentance)
Rosh HaShanah (Head of the Year, Birthday of the World)
Yom Teruah (the Day of the Awakening Blast, Feast of Trumpets)
Yom HaDin (the Day of Judgment)
HaMelech (the Coronation of the Messiah)
Yom HaZikkaron (the Day of Remembrance or memorial)
The time of Jacob's (Ya'akov) trouble (the birthpangs of the Messiah, Chevlai shel Mashiach)
The opening of the gates
Kiddushin/Nesu'in (the wedding ceremony)
The resurrection of the dead (rapture, natza1)
The last trump (Return of Mesiah) (shofar)
Yom Hakeseh (the hidden day)

HISTORICAL

Blowing the Shofar/Jewish New Year.

The Feast of Trumpets marks the Jewish (Civil) New Year and is a part of the season of repentance. The Feast of Trumpets is the head of the year on the civil calendar, and is also known as the birthday of the world. Jewish tradition believes that Adam was created on this day.

The Feast of Trumpets is observed for two days. It comes on the first and second days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei (usually in September or October), which is the first month of the biblical civil calendar. The month of Tishrei is the seventh month in the biblical religious calendar. The reason that the Feast of Trumpets is the seventh month in the biblical religious calendar is that God made the month of Nisan the first month of the year in remembrance of Israel's divine liberation from Egypt (Exodus 12:2; 13:4). However, according to tradition, the world was created on Tishrei, or more exactly, Adam and Eve were created on the first day of Tishrei and it is from Tishrei that the annual cycle began. Hence, Rosh HaShanah (the Head of the Year) is celebrated at this time.

The Feast of Trumpets is celebrated for two days because of uncertainty about observing the festivals on the correct calendar day. The Feast of Trumpets is the only holiday celebrated for two days in Israel. As with all other festivals, the uncertainty was involved in a calendar that depended on when the new moon was proclaimed, designating the beginning of each new month by the rabbinical court in Jerusalem in ancient times. The problem of the Feast of Trumpets is heightened by the fact that it falls on the first, on the new moon itself. Therefore, even in Jerusalem, it would have been difficult to let everyone know in time that the New Year had begun. To solve this problem, a two-day Feast of Trumpets was practiced even in Israel.

MESSIANIC FULFILLMENT

The Resurrection of the Dead, the return of Yeshua.

A theme and term associated with the Feast of Trumpets in Hebrew is HaMelech (the King). The shofar blown on the Feast of Trumpets is known as the last trump, which the apostle Paul mentioned in [1 Thessalonians 4:16-17]. At this time, the believers in the Messiah who are righteous will escape the remainder of the tribulation, along with the righteous who had died before this time.

SPIRITUAL APPLICATION

Hear the calling (Shofar) for our lives.

The Feast of Trumpets takes place on the new moon. [Colossians 2:16-17] says that the new moon will teach about the Messiah. The Jewish (biblical) month is based upon a lunar cycle. The moon can barely be seen as the cycle begins. But then the moon turns toward the sun and begins to reflect the light of the sun. The sun in the sky is a picture of Yeshua (Malachi 4:2), and the moon is a picture of the believers in the Messiah. The sun has its own light, but the moon's light is a reflection of the sun. When we first become believers in Yeshua, we can hardly be seen spiritually, and we know very little about God. But then our lives begin to revolve around the Messiah as the moon revolves around the sun. As we begin to turn more and more toward the center of creation, we begin to reflect that light (Yeshua) more and more, just as the moon reflects the light from the center of the solar system.

Conclusion:

This is in no way intended to be a complete understanding on this feast. However, from scripture it seems evident it pictures the return of our Messiah. As we observe these festivals and continue to read and listen we will understand the fullness of reality in Yeshua.

Thank you! I had that all printed out at one time. But with my many moves, it became lost. I don't have a printer right now but must get one soon.

Hope you are doing well. I'm good for now, just about over my first and last shingles attack, I hope.

Any insight on what God has planned for Bibi and Israel? Their left-wing is just as nuts as ours. Seems like a power struggle between the Orthodox and the right to me. Whatever happens, the rebuilding of the Temple is getting closer. Both sides seem to want to split the baby in half. Bibi seems to be the only one who wants to save the whole baby.

Hi Peewee,

I perked up when Bibi recently said he was going to annex the entire Jordan Valley, which historically, is Judea and Samaria, but called "the west bank" (of the Jordan) by many, and it belongs to Israel.

Whether God will allow Bibi to accomplish this or remove him from government because he's getting ahead of the Lord's plan remains to be seen.

God sometimes reserves for himself the fulfillment of prophecies so that it is obviously supernatural, and even more obviously performed by God and not man.

Based on Isaiah 18, I've expected Israel to be enlarged somewhat this year, or soon, and have expected a limited nuclear strike on U.S.

Our lack of response to Iran's shooting down our drone provoked Iran to carry out their destruction of half of Saudi Arabia's oil production.

Unless we respond to this tremendous provocation, Iran will assume they are home free, and go for something bigger, mainly us, i.e., our homeland!

Sorry about your shingles experience. My mother and daughter both had shingles. I have, thus far, been spared.

I had the same thought. God wants to show He's large and in-charge and nothing is too hard for Him. I thought that comment on the Jordan Valley would put him over the top with the election.

If you remember the Hawaiian alert we have been fired on. Don't know if it was nuclear or not. I think the first area they recover is southern Lebanon. I've never thought of the west bank belonging to anyone else but Israel. Same for Gaza. They had to put the killers somewhere.

I'm leery of the Saudi strike. Too many players involved. I'll wait for Pompeo's report. Pretty sure we already know exactly who did it and are just taking our time while the proper response is prepared. Whatever we do I hope it puts fear into China and N. Korea so they do the right things. I'd wait until the Ayatollah was giving a VIP tour of their underground nuclear factory and drop a limited nuclear bomb on his head as he is about to go into the mountain. Take out Iran's radar then demolish the Red Guard bases, aircraft, and ammo dumps and anything else with a military purpose. Iran has been pushing Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon around for a while, I wonder if after the dust clears they attack Iran. That could be the end for Damascus and southern Lebanon. They'd sure like to recover all the toys they can from Iran. Trump doesn't want to kill non-combatants.

Commander-in-Chief Trump of the U.S. military may not want to kill civilians, just as the rest of our military do not, but that is sometimes unavoidable.

The purpose of the military is to protect the United States and our Allies.

By cancelling his retaliation after Iran shot down our drone, he appeared to Iran to be a gutless wimp, and the attack on the Saudi oilfields took place.

Now, with still no retaliation, another attack, possibly on us, could soon take place.

The rulers of Iran are Shi'ite "Twelvers," - they are religious fanatics who believe it is their duty to create world wide chaos, which will bring the Mahdi out of the well into which he disappeared centuries ago, after which he will conquer the world on behave of their flavor of Shi'ite Islam...

You can't deal with that by talking and reasoning with them. They have no reason.

For such a mythical ruler, my question is always, could he actually exist in the future as the anti-Christ?

To qualify, Iran would have historically at some time have had to have been part of the Roman Empire. The only Romans in Persian history are related to the brief invasion and occupation of western and central areas of Parthia (modern-day Iran) by the Romans during their empire.

Roman Emperor Trajan was even temporarily able to nominate a king of western parts of Parthia, Parthamaspates, as ruler of a Roman "client state" in Parthia.

I don't think this would qualify an Iranian to be THE anti-Christ(?), but at the appointed hour, he may present himself as a fore-runner to the anti-Christ.

Peewee, this is several years old, but it explains what Iranian "Twelvers" believe about the Mahdi.

Iran, Ahmadinejad and the 12th Mahdi
Inside Iran: Signs of the Apocalypse

CBN.com – QOM, Iran - Whether it is his belief that Israel should be wiped off the map, denials of the Holocaust, obsession with going nuclear, or support for radical Islamic terrorist groups, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a man on a divine mission.

To understand him and that mission, you have to travel to a small dusty village called Jamkaran that is tucked into a corner of Iran's holy city of Qom.

On a recent Tuesday afternoon, CBN News made that journey, heading south from Iran's capital of Tehran. Some 95 miles and a couple of wrong turns later, we arrived at the Jamkaran mosque on the outskirts of Qom.

Behind the Jamkaran mosque, there is a well. And according to many Shiite Muslims, out of this well will one day emerge their version of an Islamic savior.

They call him the Mahdi, or the 12th Imam. Ron Cantrell has written a book about him.

"The Mahdi is a personage that is expected to come on the scene, by Islam, as a messiah figure. He is slotted to come at the end of time, according to their writings -- very much like how we think of the return of Jesus," said Cantrell.

Cantrell said the Mahdi, a descendent of the Prophet Mohammed, vanished in the middle of the 9th century. No one knows what he really looks like.

"The 12th Imam disappeared around the age of 9,” said Cantrell, “with a promise that he would return and bring Islam to its total fruition, as the world's last standing religion."

Enter Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Since becoming the president of Iran in August 2005, Ahmadinejad has emerged as the Mahdi's most influential follower.

“He has stated that his mandate is to pave the way for the coming of this Islamic messiah," Cantrell explained.

In almost all his speeches, the president begs Allah to hasten the return of the Mahdi.

During one speech, he is talking to soldiers at a military parade in Tehran, which was also attended by CBN News.

“Oh, Allah, please facilitate Imam Mahdi's early return and make us one of his supporters," said Ahmadinejad.

He said something similar last September, just before ending a speech at the United Nations in New York.

"Oh mighty lord, I pray to you to hasten the emergence of your last repository, the promised one, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace," Ahmadinejad prayed.

A few days later in Iran, Ahmadinejad told a group of religious leaders that, during his UN speech, he felt a bright light around him.

His reactions were captured on video and later posted on a conservative Iranian Web site.

"I felt it myself. I felt that the atmosphere suddenly changed, and for those 27 or 28 minutes, all the leaders of the world did not blink. When I say they didn't move an eyelid, I'm not exaggerating. They were looking as if a hand was holding them there, and had just opened their eyes to the message of the Islamic Republic,” Ahmadinejad recalled.

Ahmadinejad is reportedly tied to a radical Islamic society in Iran that believes man can hasten the appearance of the Mahdi by creating chaos in the world.

Ahmadinejad has stated that this chaos must take place before the Mahdi can come on the scene.

Some wonder if Ahmadinejad believes these are the end times. And, whether his calls for the destruction of Israel and nuclear pursuits are ways to accelerate the divine timetable.

"With him, it is a win-win situation,” Cantrell said. “If we attack him, he wins because chaos happens. If we don't attack him, he gets to create the chaos, which he has said he is willing to do."

In Shiite Muslim belief, the Madhi's second coming will be marked by apocalyptic times. Wars, famines, and floods will ravage the Earth -- followed by Judgment Day and a battle between good and evil.

On this Tuesday, as the sun dips behind the mountains that surround Jamkaran, the faithful -- many of whom voted for Ahmadinejad -- arrive by the thousands from across Iran to pray for the Mahdi's return.

Ezatallah Alimoradi, a follower of the Mahdi, said, "I feel so refreshed in my spirit when I come here to Jamkaran."

"This day belongs to the Mahdi,” said another follower, Akram Alsadat Emmami, “and I've come to share my heart with him."

The night begins with a visit to the sacred well. CBN News was given a rare opportunity to film people praying there. The opening of the well is covered by a green-like metal box to prevent people from jumping in.

Most of the time here is spent praying and kissing the metal box. Others scribble prayer requests to the Mahdi on pieces of paper that are then dropped into the well.

One man asks the Mahdi to forgive his sins. "If you ask in the right way, your prayers will be answered," he explained.

Another seeks healing for family members. "I don't come here just to pray for myself,” he said. “I also ask the Mahdi to take care of my family and their needs."

Many, like one young boy with a flashlight, believe the Mahdi is actually hiding at the bottom of the well, reading those prayer requests.

"I was looking into the well with my flashlight,” the boy said, “hoping to see the Mahdi -- but not tonight."

Shia tradition teaches that if you come to Jamkaran 40 weeks in a row, you will "see" the Mahdi.

A woman said, "I have not had the privilege to see him yet, but I've had many dreams about him. In one of my dreams, I saw a big bright light in the sky and this figure standing over me."

The next few hours are spent praying inside the Jamkaran mosque.

At the Jamkaran mosque, I've been told that, as a non-Muslim, I am not allowed to go inside. The truth is, though, every day tens of thousands of men and women come through the mosque to say their prayers -- and also to pray that one day soon the Mahdi would return.

Nadal, a follower of the Mahdi, said, "And because we believe that he is going to come back soon, we can believe in heaven and hell and we can believe in the life after death."

Ahmadinejad's government reportedly gave $20 million to help renovate the Jamkaran mosque. There are rumors that he is planning to build a railway line connecting Tehran and Jamkaran, to ferry the faithful.

And apparently, Ahmadinejad has also drawn up plans for the road that the Mahdi will take when he returns.

Cantrell said, "...that will actually serve as the red carpet rolled out in Iran for the Mahdi to appear."

And if all this wasn't mystical enough, there is also the belief that when the Mahdi comes back, he will be accompanied by Jesus Christ, who is referred to as the prophet Isa.

"The Mahdi will take Jesus to Mecca,” Cantrell explained. “They will circumambulate the Kabah together. The Mahdi will teach Jesus to pray, at which time Jesus will then replace the Gospel with the Koran, and then all of us -- as Christians -- wherever you are on the face of the Earth, will convert to Islam because Islam will be deemed the one lasting pure religion."

As the West drifts closer to a potential showdown over Iran's nuclear program, followers of the Mahdi are getting ready for Judgment Day.

And many of them are convinced that President Ahmadinjead, who is considered by some as Allah's shadow on Earth, will fulfill his divine mission to prepare the world for the coming of the Islamic savior.

Thanks, Z! I'd read some of it after the Iraq war. A refresher is always nice. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was arrested in 2017 and rumors floated that he died in 2019. But relatives say he's alive and well.

Makes sense to me, Peewee, Ahmadinejad probably joined the Mahdi in that same well...

I know that news report was outdated, but it outlines what the Twelvers believe about the Mahdi, and the ruling Ayatollahs are all Twelvers, so their beliefs haven't changed.

I don't know, was watching some of my favorite Qanons YT vids and one went back to the 1953 Iran leader. Forget his name but the facts surrounding his assassination have been declassified. It was Ike, UK, and BP oil that took him out because he wanted to nationalize the nation's oil. He was pro-west and was pushing for democracy. BP got the oil and Iran got CIA Black Ops installed ever since. It also revealed that Carter and the first Ayatollah talked to each other for months before the Shah was overthrown. Maybe it's all a CIA script. The CIA was also running N. Korea but were removed in Trump's first year.
