California wants to start paying college athletes to play sports, and let them get paid for endorsements and hire agents while in school. This is unprecedented. Do you think this is good for college sports or bad?

They are already paid, by way of a free ride to school. Not all of them will turn pro, so get that education!! I think the whole idea is a bad one, because it creates a new class sytem for college athletes. Only the really good ones get paid, by way of endorsements, so where as we cry for equal pay for all, this goes totally against that principle. Schools are definitely profiting off these kids, so maybe a small monthly stipend wouldn't be a bad idea, but I think it would be difficult to figure out.

Billions of dollars are made on their backs by everyone from the universities and coaches to TV networks. Taxpayer funded public universities pay football coaches many times what the state governors earn. Not only should the athletes be paid, they should be given the opportunity to unionize and retain agents.

A personal example...when one college sent someone to talk to me.

He said that I could have a part time job watching the automatic sprinkles come on at the baseball field.

He offered me an alumni owned pickup to drive.

That was over 40 years ago. I'm sure that most have refined the compensation to athlete's already.

The man didn't talk about a fine education being offered.

They get paid get endorsements and hire agents if and when they turn pro and not before. We don't need a bunch of rich kids running around college now do we. They are already considered elite because they are jocks we don't need to elevate them any higher than they already are. A number of them already get their tuition reduced and other perks for playing sports they don't need a big checkbook to boot.

I don't believe its a good thing to pay college athletes to play sports. They already are getting an expensive education, all while doing what they love to do. Yes, they bring in money for the colleges they play for, but, they also take a lot from the schools. Some move on to the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, hockey or wh**ever sport and make millions. Those that don't move on to the pro's and make millions are given an education and are given the tools that they need to be successful in life, all because they are good at a sport and some college or university wanted them to play for them and represent them and gave them a free education to do so. I believe the current way things are done is a win, win for everyone. To ad paying these athletes to the equation would ruin the system. Of course the idea comes from California.

They should be allowed to receive compensation for endorsements. Look at Johnny football, a bust as a pro. There are many others.

On a slightly different tack, have you ever noticed that almost all of the recruiting scandals involve basketball or football but rarely, if at all, baseball? I think the reason is baseball's development programs, are the minor leagues. Basketball has a development league but face it, the colleges are really the development programs for the pros.

It will be bad if it goes into action. College students are amateur athletes, not the pros who should be getting those big bucks. I don't think they'll spend any time on schoolwork.
