Mother Shoots Daughter After She Came Home From College to Surprise Her

September 04, 2019

A woman shot her 18-year-old daughter in her home after she came back from college to surprise her, according to reports. The daughter is recovering after she was shot in the arm in Girard, Ohio, on the evening of August 30.
Police said the mother was alone in the bedroom when she heard noises from inside the house. The mother became startled as she was not expecting anyone to come over. The mother said she then saw someone running into the bedroom, at which point she fired her .38 special handgun, hitting her daughter once.
Police say they were called at around 9 p.m. to the 200 block of Ohio Avenue by the victim's boyfriend. A transcript of the 911 call made by the boyfriend, obtained by WFMJ, has him describing the 18-year-old's injuries to the dispatcher.
"My girlfriend just came home from college and her mom didn't know, like honestly—she accidentally shot her and we don't know what to do," he said. "It's pretty bad."
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 18-year-old "covered in blood" while walking down the driveway with a towel wrapped around her arm, reports WKBN.
"The mother who has a valid CCW permit—even though she was in her own house, was startled by some noises she heard in the kitchen or hallway area," Girard Police Chief John Norman told WFMJ. "She stated that the bedroom door opened where she was at—and she had a gun readily available and she fired a round at someone coming through the door."
It is unknown at this stage if the mother will face any charges as a result of the shooting.
"We will collect all the facts, and we will present it to a Prosecutor, not to be malicious. But we have to present the facts like we would in any other case," Norman said. "At that point the Prosecutor will make a decision whether we will go ahead and charge or not charge in this case."
Police recovered a handgun from the scene of the shooting, which had four live rounds in and one fired cylinder.
The 18-year-old is reported to be resting after being released from hospital following her treatment for her gunshot wound.
Norman offered tips on what to do to avoid such an accident.
"If you realize someone has a gun for protection, and they're not expecting you—announce yourself when you enter the home, or even if you're getting up to get a drink of water in the middle of the night, just announce yourself," he told WFMJ.
