You are going to have to look deeper than just the mental state of violent individuals. Put aside your emotional reactions to something like this, drop the "shock factor", and approach the problem calmly, objectively and rationally.

According to a study published in the Psychiatric Services Journal, 3.4% of the U.S. population, or more than 8 million Americans, suffer from serious psychological distress, and only 3% of those are dangerous (mostly to themselves--suicide is rather high on the list of causes of death.)

According to research published by the American Psychological Association, more U.S. adolescents and young adults in the late 2010s, versus the mid-2000s, experienced serious psychological distress, major depression or suicidal thoughts, and more attempted suicide. These trends are weak or non-existent among adults 26 years and over, suggesting a generational shift in mood disorders instead of an overall increase across all ages.

But, beyond the mental health issues, what are the contributing influences that cause people to go on a violent rampage?

The root causes cannot be found in the results of violence, they are not evident in the effects. An act of violence is a symptom of something far more fundamental. And, the root causes can never be eliminated through legislation--such as passing stricter gun control laws. Guns are neither the cause of violence nor are they a symptom of violent behavior.

The last thing we need is for congress to once again attempt to "solve" a problem that transcends politics.

Just because he was white male doesn't mean he was right wing nutter..My son is white and he is far from right wing nut...As a matter a fact he leans more toward left wing...So my point is not all white men are mass shooters....This one probably committed some other crime and was fleeing the scene when police stopped him...He shot police officer and that's how the whole thing started...
