Trump had a one on one opportunity to directly punish a huge electronics corporation ZTE that was an example of trade problems and c***ting. It was the white house, Trump himself that went sanctions light on this company. The optics were really really bad as China seemed to be holding a $500 million enticement in a Trump resort over his head. Trump wouldn't want to jeopardize that.
Trump has been hampered by a host of conflicts of interest concerning his daughter's businesses and patents as well as other resort and property entanglements from the start. It's hard to crack down on a country when you have business interests. How about selling immigration status for purchases of condominiums? Check...they did that. So where was Trump on trade as his family worked China like gypsy grifters? And then we have the fact that as deals are worked and things are sorted out the family businesses can get special treatment to make it easier on China to arrive at a deal.
