Anyone Who Looks At The Emissions Rollback Could Not Possibly Think It's Intelligent

Never was an issue easier to look at the pros and cons and make a decision as to whether it makes any sense. Trump makes these edicts that maybe one entity like oil companies benefits from because they sell more gasoline, and doesn't even try to come up with any arguments that support benefits. When I heard the lamest excuse ever being rolled out it was funny except the guy is serious. Trump actually said that he was doing people a favor by decreasing fuel economy because the higher cost would mean people travel less.

Meanwhile the auto industry came to the conclusion early on that this was a disaster, it would have an array of negative impacts on the auto industry, including inferior parts, lose over 200,000 industry jobs, increase pollution, decrease fuel efficiency, and create chaos in the country with states adopting different mileage standards, thereby interfering in commerce between states.

California has the ability by law to set it's own standards, and the reality is that it was going it's own way and using the highest standards in the country as a very successful means to fight pollution in congested areas. The auto industry saw the wisdom and benefits of complying with their standards, and they were adopted for all of the states.

California just drop kicked and body slammed Trump by not only refusing to comply, but forming an agreement with several other auto makers to adhere to the Obama level standards in a unified way. Mercedes announced that they would be agreeing. Trump is digging in and trying to force compliance, which I don't even understand what that means...what, he is trying to force them to make crappier emissions standards?

Here's a KOS piece that actually covers the bases in a relatively non derogatory manner

The auto industry “saw the wisdom and benefits of complying”? More likely the financial benefits were at the top of their list............ie: subsidies for most of the ridiculous price tag for the notoriously inefficient Volt. The value of the various bailouts is impossible to calculate. The feds have passed many regulations on the auto industry that have had enormous benefits for the traveling public but these days they are basically just perpetuating patronage.

It takes more of the diluted gasoline to reach your destination so the net reduction in emissions is not as great as indicated by a static running test. I don't think tests have been run to compare actual use compared to lab results, probably because fact might destroy most of the alleged benefits of the program.

Actually what matters most to Trump is that the oil industry wants less efficient cars that burn more gas. A few years back I was seeing a statistic that said that every mile per gallon the industry saves amounts to something like 27 million gallons a day.

This has a few more insights into the "fight" as Trump sees it. He's ready to scrap it as the loser it is but retaliate against California for having the gall to defy his eminence

The Trump administration has yet to come up with a coherent reason this was a good idea.

Auto makers are cozying up to California's emission standards and rejecting Trump's because California buys more cars than any other state.
