The so called squad should consider the unintended consequences of their occasionally intemperate language but hardly worse than people like Steve King or the President himself with their incendiary r****t memes and dog whistles. There is a lack of precision about defining anti semitism however that is all too convenient for shutting down criticism of Israeli foreign and domestic policy.
Sure Israel is the only real parliamentary democracy surrounded by hostile, bloodthirsty neighbors so their hair trigger response to any threat, domestic or foreign is understandable if occasionally over the top, but within Israel itself there is a robust political dialogue about the Palestinian issue and intense criticism of heavy handed policies like house demolition. That criticism from Israelis themselves does not earn them anti Semitic labels but if non Jews voice these same concerns then they are absolutely anti Semitic which is a dogwhistle accusation of N**ism and a short step from Holocaust Denial and calling for the dismemberment of Israel.
Israel is a great country just like the US. Both are imperfect democracies but the allowance of criticism and furious open public debate is what elevates us above these tin pot dictatorships and absolute monarchy’s.
Criticism may make us occasionally angry and outraged but labeling the critics anti Semitic or anti American is just a cheap and brainless way to avoid having to mount an intelligent and robust rejoiner.
