First, laws were passed making AR-15s and similar (Semi-auto versions of AK-47s, SKSs, etc.) guns and accessories illegal, but if you already had them, you could keep them if you registered them (you can not, however sell it, gift it or pass it on after you die). One year later, it became a felony to possess all such weapons that had not been registered. If you are found in possession of such an unregistered weapon (police searching your house following a burglary, your wife/girlfriend/enemy turning you in, being stupid enough to bring one to a public shooting range, etc.) you are arrested and charged with a felony and the weapon is confiscated. If convicted of this felony, ALL of your weapons are confiscated. Many law-abiding residents of NY did register these guns so when the Democrat Assembly and Democrat Senate pass and the Democrat governor signs a law making these guns illegal whether registered or not, the police have a relatively easy task lifting the telephone and telling those who registered their guns they are in possession of illegal weapons and must turn them in to the nearest police station. Tens of thousands of NY citizens DID NOT register these guns so we now have tens of thousands of new felons in NY. Shouting from the rooftops a law is unconstitutional does not make it so and, so far, these laws in NY have NOT been found unconstitutional.

Here’s how they do it in Cali. First they passed a law declaring all older AR-15s illegal unless it had been registered. Because of that law, which I had been unaware of, I learned I was a felon cuz I had an older AR-15.
So to be a law abiding citizen I purchased a brand new fully legal AR-15. Lo and behold, shortly thereafter I learned that even the newer AR-15s have to now be registered, or possessing them would constitute a felony. And registration could only be done online. So I repeatedly tried to register before the deadline, but the site kept crashing. I’m no computer whiz so I thought I was just doing something wrong. Anyway the deadline came and went and my AR-15 didn’t get registered.
Then I learn that there’s been a class action filed by AR-15 owners in Cali complaining that almost NOBODY could register their guns online because the site didn’t work - and that it had been deliberately designed to fail.
I don’t know where the lawsuit is now, or how many felons there are in Cali for owning “illegal” AR-15s but likely a lot. I hope the court throws out the latest registration requirement. It’s really the only fair outcome of this lawsuit.
