We have many people who fit the technical profile; "a troll is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotions." Just yesterday I caused a person to go into meltdown....so, technically that individual could label me as a troll, although I had no intent of hurting his/her feelings.

In a long-ago post, I described what constituted a troll to me: "The so-called 'trolls', IMHO, come from either side of the ideological spectrum. Bad manners and vulgar language, along with a need to agitate others or discourage honest discourse, are what constitute a troll to me."

Regardless of where you'll find Internet trolls lurking, they all tend to disrupt communities in very similar (and often predictable) ways. This isn't by any means a complete list of all the different types of trolls out there, but they're most certainly some of the most common types you'll often come across in active online communities.

BTW, I should state that neither Fullspinzoo nor Liberty Tree meet the above brief, past definition of a troll by me. Without denying that I see them as trolls of different sorts, I can't recall either of them ever being vulgar or exhibiting terribly bad manners. I apologize to both Fullspinzoo and Liberty Tree.

And, as several have written: To some degree, most OPPers have crossed over into the realm of trolling.
