This needs to be a referendum by all of the states. I think if a majority of states support the referendum, it could pass. Someone with more knowledge about states legislative authority might be in a better position to answer that question.

I think 12. That gives them two terms in the Senate or six terms in the House. That is enough. But wh**ever limit is decided upon, it needs to be done. They need to be booted out and forced to live with the laws they passed while they were in office--no exceptions or exemptions.

Being a U.S. Congressman was never supposed to be a lifelong career with special privileges, where they somehow amass a fortune and then retire with a sweet benefits package …. compliments of the U.S. taxpayer.

Congress will never go for it. If the people want term limits then all they have to do is not reelect anyone after they have served 12 years. That makes it an equal amount of time for both houses of Congress. Otherwise it would probably need a constitutional amendment by the states to bypass Congress.

Since the v**ers in part are not using common sense with their v**e I believe you are right. However, how are we to encourage congress to pass such a measure? Doubt it will happen.

There is a nonprofit organization working on this and have had success in maybe 30 states do far to call a special convention of the states to enact new amendments to the Constitution putting term limits on Congress. It is a good thing but I'm afraid our nation will simply be too far gone to save by the time this action succeeds.

This has been discussed since the 80’s and probably long before that. Politicians only care about themselves, regardless of what they say. They do the bidding and selling out of everyone in the country to whomever gives them the money to be a politician. They will never relent that power to keep their power.

The term for a senator is six years so that would have to be changed to follow what you propose. 12 years would give them two terms like the president under current law.

Would probably need a constitutional amendment.
