One more set of facts to stir the pot...tyranny of the minority....

If about seven in ten Americans oppose overturning Roe v Wade (according to a 2017 Pew Research poll), then why are Republicans trying so hard to overturn it as if it's deeply unpopular?

This may well be a chilling answer.

The Republicans are not concerned with what the majority thinks.

They are not counting on holding power through a coalition of the majority.

They are expecting, and planning to grasp and hold power through mobilizing a minority, and keeping enough of the majority from having access to the v**e.

The Republican Party and its platform is no longer a combination that can win a majority of US v**ers. They had two choices.

1) Make adjustments in their platform to expand their v**er base. This would involve some hard compromises, stop alienating minority v**ers, moderate on some issues. OR

2) Double down on their existing platform and agenda, and try to stop the majority from being able to v**e, or dilute their v**e, or make it irrelevant.

They chose 2). The dangerous part of this is—once you give up on trying to represent a majority, and stay with a minority who will v**e for you no matter what, simply out of tribalism, then anything goes. You don’t have to worry about what is popular or not, what is supported by the majority of the nation—or not. Anything goes, and this tyranny of the minority will do anything to keep the majority from expressing its will.

I find it richly ironic, that the party that screams “LOCK HER UP! LOCK HER UP!” and elects a dangerous demagogue like Trump, has been so worried about “mob rule” or “tyranny of the majority”. They obviously have no concern about either, as long as they get to be the mob and the tyranny.

By your thinking the federal government was wrong to force integration on the states where the majority opposed it. The SCOTUS was wrong to take prayer out of schools when the majority favored it. You are admitting Democrats have no principles and will just do what the majority wants. You talk about tyranny, but it is the Democrats who have no respect for the Constitution and especially the Bill of Rights.

Permafrost, perhaps you should in out of the cold and expose yourself to the light and defrost. First of all what might be 'popular' isn't always right. What you are describing as an attempted power grab is painfully obvious on the Left with their support of wholesale importation of uneducated disease ridden migrants who they feel they can easily manipulate to seize power.

Polls only represent those who are polled, no poll represents all Americans. For example, Jan 2019 a poll was conducted on Roe vs Wade. The outcome was clear, but only for the group questioned.... just as your poll report. One would think that people who appear to be intelligent would put faith in polls after the shame of poll misrepresentation of the Trump vs k**lary e******n.... what was it, 95 percent said k**lary would win...????

Anyway, back to the polls even though 55 percent of Americans identify as "pro-choice," strong majorities of Americans in each party would restrict a******n to the first three months of pregnancy, or to cases of rape and incest or to save the life of the mother.

A full 60 percent of Democrats, 92 percent of Republicans, and 72 percent of independents support this kind of a******n restriction.

The simple terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice" do not capture specific policy preferences or even larger views about whether or not a human fetus is life, Walther argued.

A majority of American adults (52 percent) agreed that life begins either at conception (42 percent) or in the first three months of pregnancy (10 percent). Only 19 percent said life begins when a fetus is viable outside the womb, and 13 percent said life begins when the baby is born.

When Americans were asked about the "scientific view of a human fetus," 56 percent said "it is a unique life," while only 35 percent said "it is part of a woman's body."

Interesting, this poll was conducted in new york.... haven for liberals and democrats. http://www.kofc.org/en/news/polls.html#/ https://www.npr.org/2019/06/07/730183531/poll-majority-want-to-keep-a******n-legal-but-they-also-want-restrictions

Actually, they have a more sinister plan. By remaking the Judiciary into an ultra right wing institution, they will be making law far into the foreseeable future.

You see, no matter who comes along after them making more reasonable law, this minority will sue in the full confidence that the Federal courts ( including SCOTUS ) will rule in their favor.

Who are you trying to kid? The left has made it known publicly that they want to "stack" the courts with left wing, activist judges.

Do judges who follow the original intent of the Constitution bother you for some reason?

In my mind, this thread is BS to begin with. No disrespect to the frozen one intended, of course.

Roe v. Wade isn't law, homo marriage isn't law, a LOT of stuff isn't law because the Constitution does NOT give the judicial branch the power to make law.

And you of course like seemingly all the right wingers, have the right to tell the entire nation what to do and how to live their lives..

Such an average and predictable right wing mob today..

do you want the t***h of why you right wingers are called "right"?

very simply and as dumb as most political standards..
It is due to the seating arrangement of some old parliament back in the day.. the conservatives sat on the right.. that is all, nothing more to it..

support the constitution and allies.. LOL

Like the emoluments and divestment rules.. the insults before arriving in a city for a state style dinner..
sure some class on the right wing orange dip stick..

I could indeed support some policies which are considered socialist.. Democratic socialist....
thing like profit sharing, national health, reduced cost of education, police protection, fire stations, air ports, ocean docks, electric grid, uniform regulations and standards for education, highway and other infrastructure projects.

What do you h**e about it? SS, Medicare, OSHA, EPA, consumer protection laws..

Gee you are a h**e full example of the right wingers, fit with them nicely, for nothing and against it all.

I am for keeping the dreamers.. I am for border security... I am for a review of i*********n l*ws and a revised code which is reasonable and workable..

I appose the wall, it is a poor and costly solution to a problem better dealt with otherwise..

Iran was under the best relations with US since before the 50s o*******w.. all concerned agreed the pact was working and then along came the orange dip sh** and needed to undo all Obama work. Good or bad..

So now we can watch as the war drums thud and Bolton works trump up to getting it done.
If the polls which drove the orange loser to fire his own, get worse the war will come sooner rather then later..

lady Hilary and President Obama did a wonderful job, if not for the orange mouth of trump urging you to h**e them with your very souls,if you have any, you could easily see how sick and pathetic a piece of protoplasm he is..

Uranium... christ on a bike... how many times must your be told the t***h and so obvious on the story.. I will not be bothered to repeat it one more time just for your thick head..

majority... yes indeed we are.. and this next time if we do not all git off our butt and v**e, then we deserve the end of the nation we love by the orange bobble head and his cult..

You ever wonder why nearly all cities are governed by Democrats?? Or wonder about anything?

Back in the olden days, the wealthy lived in the country side in great houses, the Republicans, then as now, knew where the money was and rushed to gain their allegiance.

that left the uncared for masses in the city with no representation and the Democrats took up the challenge.. with all the bad and pestilence dumped on the cities by the wealthy, it remains that way to this day..

Lord, you get suck in by nearly everything don`t you..

Israels secret air base... now that must be closely held, nation the size of Minnesota's Lake county and surrounded by Arabs pledged to drive them from the earth, and they have a SECRET AIR BASE.. who would thunk it...

The demorats are so unprincipled nowadays. Immorality, sexual perversion, anti -God, anti-American,marxist ideology, infanticide. I can't think of 1 good idea that has come from the demonic party in at least 20 years. The dems can tear down but can't build up. All are a sorrowful lot and Perm leads the pack.

LOL, you live well only because of what the Democrats have done for you and others.. All of the others, not only the 1%...

https://www.civicsnation.org/2018/07/30/democratic-accomplishments/

Democrat Jimmy Carter established the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He created the Department of Education and the Department of Energy and negotiated the Camp David Accords, which led to the signing of a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Carter was also responsible for renegotiating the Panama Canal treaty in ways that were favorable for America.

Bill Clinton was responsible for signing several laws we take for granted today—the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Clinton also established the National V***r R**********n Act (also known as the “Motor V**er” act), which requires state governments to offer v***r r**********n to people who apply for or renew their driver’s license or apply for public assistance.

Democrat Barack Obama is best known for the Affordable Care Act which, although it didn’t do everything he hoped healthcare reform would do, did require insurance companies to cover people with pre-existing conditions and established “exchanges” where individuals could purchase high-quality health insurance at an affordable price. He also signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act, and a nuclear arms reduction pact with Russia.

Democratic presidents have led many reform efforts and created many programs that we still hold sacred even today.
