Do you really feel that our service men from every war our country has waged were not patriots?
These patriots gave up their arms ,legs, their sight and even their very lives standing up for our country
I am a patriot
I believe in this nation
my country right or wrong
I am a patriot

We know who we are and so does he. He just likes to make a big noise.

You say that while having lock step opposition to Trump and hatred for him and the right. You are right in that you are no patriot because you stand against the Constitution and especially the Bill of Rights as the founders intended. Today's liberals are the corrupting influence that will destroy America id ever given full power.

Yawn again. Why a yawn? Because you make every thread the same: attack liberals with the same lockstep insults. (I could consider it a compliment how obsessed you are with me as the thing to talk about.)

The topic is patriotism: do you have an opinion on THAT subject or just the usual dull and repeated ad hominem? You're acting like just an echo chamber: same lah blah blah about the Left and no intelligent responses to any topics.

Maybe I don't know, yet you appear unable to talk on the subject. Do you know? If so, why not enlightened us instead of petty insults.

Thus, historically, when men like Shakespeare have partaken of national p***e, they have also believed in their own worth as human beings and have been able to put that belief to good use artistically, intellectually, and scientifically.

Ultimately, it must be concluded that only those who do not wish a nation to prosper culturally, or to defend its integrity against an enemy, will not wish the people of that nation to be patriotic. Love of country and love of liberty are inseparable aspects of the same basic human approach to civilized life. Mature love is an extension of self that must be freely given, and cannot be adequately developed in an atmosphere of repression. Those who would take away a man’s freedom are well aware that they must first take away that man’s belief in the integrity and worth of those in his cultural and social complex who protect him from oppression.

We would hope that our public educators will not continue to advocate o*******w of American liberty by suppressing patriotic and moral attitudes in the schools. The study of Shakespearean literature would more surely benefit students than the consideration of the doctrine of universal love. Shakespeare pondered the "to be or not to be" question, and decided that the struggle to save his country from ruin was more desirable than a quiet death. If educators were to approach patriotism as Shakespeare did, they would know that "to be," or, to live, means to be free, and to learn to love one’s country freely.

Excellent article and so nice to have someone actually devout time and energy to debate the subject instead of using the space for petty name-calling and insults. Thank you.

That's right, keep trying to ban words and phrases until all ideas and their communication are controlled by an approved lexicon of political correctness and newspeak. What you propose is against the founding law of the land, but keep trying, you never know, right?

Do you have only opinions on me or can you share something on the topic of this thread: patriotism.

I couldn't agree more. That so-called 'patriot act' spits in the face of our founding documents and treats solid Americans like criminals regardless of their patriotism. Every time we submit to an illegal search and seizure at the airport we tell the despots in Washington it's okay to trample on our God-given rights, and don't start me on FISA...

You’re welcome, Rumi, happy you enjoyed the article. Coos Bay Tom triggered my memory of the article, as it seemed the subject interested him quite a bit. Great topic for discussion on your part.

Thoroughly agree and it has been a sticking point for me since it passed. That is not patriotism for this country. Maybe for any dictatorship on earth or some Banana Republic but not America. Disgraceful. And an excellent line of thought about patriotism, Larry.

Patriotism is defined without parameters. It is not explained or examined what this love of country means. It is silly to try to differentiate between nationalism when the Congress of the United States of America betrayed our founding principles out of fear and vengeance. No one can really define the limits of patriotism, as we see in a number of responses on this thread. Is it my country right or wrong? Is it to attack those who find our government's policies to lack justice? Are protesters against such policies enemies of the state?

This is when patriotism gets twisted and morphed into Nationalism. Love for country is still a good thing, blind loyalty to a person is not.

Loyalty is a person like Trump is better than loyalty to the likes of Obama and Hillary. Slow Joe got 100 people to his rally and Trump people have been waiting 40 hours to get into his rally. Believe your eyes, not the polls.
