Well, that’s heartbreaking. I could’ve loved him. No living thing should be left out of love. Wish those who love them could save all of them. Doris Day would’ve.

One of the most difficult dogs to place is a dog past his prime. Unfortunately, when people go to nursing homes, usually their dogs can't go with them. If no provisions for a home for the dog have been made, the dog ends up in a shelter and usually is euthanized. These dogs make great pets because they were loved and cared for until the owner went into the nursing home. If you are willing and able to care for them, contact doctors and hospitals that work with geriatric patients and leave your name with them, as well as a number of local churches. Many older people have made no provisions for their dogs. Often these people have altzimers and cannot understand what is going on, and, if they do not have relatives who want the dogs, the dogs are deemed unadoptable. Spread the word and you will find a number of wonderful dogs that make loving companions, and have fewer problems than the young dogs put in rescue. Keep in mind that a large number of young dogs end up in rescue because they have MAJOR temperament problems. Others are not housebreakable, no matter what you try to do, and a number are street dogs, never been around people, or been in a house, and are not touchable. Perhaps an expert could work with them, but the average person would not be able to make them into reliable safe house pets. The other source for a reliable dog without paying a lot of money is a small breeder who has retired dogs, well socialized and with great temperaments but no longer needed in their breeding program. However, most of those breeders have waiting lists and usually place their retired dogs in homes with people who have had dogs from them before, but you can always ask around. Just don't get an older dog from a puppy mill, you will probably be getting more trouble than you can handle.

I don't think there's a dog that can't be rehabilitated. It would take a special person's kindness. Dogs, along with other animals, respond to kindness. The rehabilitated dog would most likely be a one person, or one family, dog. However, they could present a problem, when not being familiar with other people.

No, you are wrong, there are dogs that are dangerous no matter what. It is not a matter of rehabilitation, something is wrong with the dog that cannot be solved. Ask any person who has spent most of his/her life training dogs and they will tell you of a dog or two that are dangerous period, and need to be euthanized. They may have rage syndrome, or some other physical condition or just have never been socialized at all. Soome, for what ever reason, are always going to act like a wild animal, and not ever be safe for family dogs. Some of these make excellent dogs to guard factories at night, but can not be made into family dogs.

Agreed. Some dogs are also messed up due to poor genetics.

And mistreatment. I abhor abuse of any kind. It makes me feel murderous but I have that under control. Mike
