Keep us updated on the progress with “Buddy “. We ALL want to know.
Yesterday, he actually showed up here, and I let him in the yard. He sniffed around a bit, then bolted out the gate when our dogs started barking in the house. I shut the gate, and let our dogs out to see what would happen. Buddy stayed there, and wagged his tail till our bulldog snapped at him through the fence, then he jetted.
We just fed him, and hung out with him for a bit, but he's like a wild animal. We can't get near him. We're at a loss here.
But it looks like he's putting on a little weight in spite of the skeeters eating him alive.

But, why won't he at least let us touch him? The slightest movement, and he freaks.
I'm no dog expert, or trainer, but I've worked with a lot of horses. A friend bought two mustangs years ago that were easier to crack than this guy!

It could very well be he escaped from his owner, ran off and has been living on his own for some time. It does happen. And some dogs are just shier or more suspicious. He’ll come around in time.

Usually when they've been hit a lot. There are some scumbags that will start off with a petting and turn it into abuse. Or maybe he was caged and is afraid you'll grab him and put him in a cage. I think you guys are making tremendous strides. So very kind of you to take care of this poor guy
I can see he looks like hes filling out a bit, and is also beginning to lose the "scared dog hunch". Look at the first pic you posted compared to today's 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

My niece owns two rescued dogs for going on two years and they are still like African wild dogs. If I visit them it still takes an hour to calm them down. One hides for that long until she allows herself to be petted and the male scratches and mugs you and play bites for that hour. Who knows what these dogs have suffered in their previous years ?

I have a question about the wormer, Rose. I've given Ivomec to one dog on the advice of a vet who told me about it as a friend. 1 cc per 100 lbs of body weight.
It saved a Dalmation years ago who was eaten up by mange, so I know it works.
Here's where I'm giong. I need to get a tube of paste wormer for my horse, and he's around 900 lbs. A tube does a 1200lb horse. How much do I give the dog?
Currently, I would guess him to be no more than 40lbs.

The dosage is 22.7 mg per pound for 3 days. I get Safeguard paste for horses - the 25g size. Each gram has 100mg. There are notches on the tube. If the dog weighs 40 pounds I give them about a half teaspoon. Its a safe wormer - I know of a dog that ate a whole tube and he just had diarrhea for a day. Don’t worry about giving a little extra. I’d repeat again in a month.

Yes it is possible he’s never been abused. There are a lot of dogs out there who don’t like everybody. And as you say the longer without contact the harder it can be. Or he could have gotten lost only to have someone abuse him and break his trust with humans.
