Those of us who served and came home alive are called veterans. We have our own day, Veteran’s Day, on November 11th. Those who took the Angel Flight home, or who didn’t come home alive, are the ones we honor on Memorial Day. Please know the difference.
Memorial Day is to honor military personnel who died in the service of our country. Traditionally, on Memorial Day, the f**g is to be raised briskly to the top of the pole at dawn, and then lowered to half-staff until noon. At noon, the f**g is then raised to the top of the pole, and remains there for the rest of the day.
Memorial Day was held on May 30th for 102 years – from 1868 to 1970. On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved four holidays (Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran’s Day) from their traditional dates to a specified Monday, in order to create more three-day weekends. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional date to the last Monday in May. This has caused Memorial Day to lose much of its meaning, and it has mostly become a weekend of barbeques, picnics, baseball, and beach parties.
Because we veterans came home alive and had a voice, in 1978 we succeeded in having Veterans Day moved back to the traditional date of November 11th. Those we honor on Memorial Day have no voice. The late Daniel Inouye, Hawaii’s former Senator and a WWII veteran, tried for many years without success to return Memorial Day to May 30th.
Those who died defending our freedom should be honored on the correct date, and May 30th is the correct date for Memorial Day. It needs to be restored to the correct date.
