[quote=Zemirah]Slatten,

By posting only the 2nd half of my written thought, you neglected to include the entire first half of what was intended to be one sentence... I inadvertently hit the period rather than comma, however reading through this:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Zemirah…

Admittedly, I did recognize your complete thought and your punctuational error as such. However, I took your "smuggest, most condescending" comment too much to heart and so allowed it to dictate my response.

I have previously written that I see both sides (in this case, religious/scientific) of discussions on OPP too often guilty of moral and/or intellectual airings of superiority. Both can also appear condescending and arrogant, with some self-righteous indignation thrown in. Both can be guilty of snarkiness and dismissive attitudes towards those with opposing views. In other words, I have seen the enemy and...paraphrasing Pogo...it is us. One side's behavior is no reason for reciprocation. It can only be used as an excuse.

In short, regardless of my interpretation of your message, there was no call for reciprocation on my part. For that, I apologize for exhibiting the same over-sensitivity that I suggested you had shown previously. Your tempered, scholarly, and gentlemanly response helped lead me to realizing my over-reaction.

Finally, as reasonable men may have reasonable differences, I hope that you did take note that we seem to agree in that religion and science can/do co-exist. That was the gist of my posts, as I read 'em.

Permafrost, This is the account (ad-libbed in my words) in which it is claimed that Islam proclaims Muhammad became a prophet:

Muhammad's first revelation was an event described in Islam as taking place in 610 AD, when Muhammad was approaching the age of 40, during which Muhammad was visited by the archangel Jibraeel (Gabriel) dressed in white, who revealed to him the first verses of what would later become the Qur'an. The event took place in a cave at night, called Gari' hira{the cave of hira}, located on top of the mountain Jabal an-Nour, near Mecca on the Arabian Peninsula. Jibraeel (Gabriel) told him, "You are the messenger of God."

"Read in the name of thy Lord Who created; created man from a clot (of congealed blood): Read and thy Lord is most Bountiful, Who taught (the use of) the pen, taught man that which he knew not." (Qur'an, 96:1-5)

Muhammad was in the custom of visiting Cave Hira, sometimes for weeks in solitude and meditation.
He did not see God explicitly or directly while on mount Hira.

He was commanded to proclaim the ONENESS of God.

Later Muhammad with the help of his wife Khadija, who was also his first cousin (as is the custom), and his cousin Waraqah, amassed enough confidence and began converting people into Islam.

That's all for now. I have none of my books on Islam here.

Truly a nice companion on your Picture.. very nice..

My use of the time line I put in was very arbitrary and by no means meant to be accurate.. only that at the general time of the middle ages, the monasteries were the center of education..

Visits to caves... I can not resist,, do you consider Muhammad s visit to the cave to get the word of God from Jesus as part of these cave assemblies?

Interesting post.. I enjoyed it.. thanks... have a nice evening..

Sorry, Slatten, my caustic mouth took control.

You were doing so well until you got to the "gentlemanly" bit, and compounded it with the "reasonable men" phrase.

You're putting me on, right?

No. After being not quite so before, I'm just being as polite and civil as I can be. Besides, compared to some of the posters on OPP, you are really quite gentlemanly and reasonable.

I try to be. I also try to follow my signature line below.

Your signature line is too trite for my contemplation.

I'd rather dispense pertinent, timely research than be either polite or civil, thank you.

Because I love being a woman, have always been one, and choose always to remain so;

short of shape-shifting, your signature line, would, for me, be non attainable.

For men, being "big" and "noble" are praiseworthy manly goals, so you keep trying.

Trying counts, as the pursuit of largess and nobility is an honorable estate to achieve.

You are a man who does "know your limitations."

Interesting take. I read the quote, attributed to Abraham Lincoln, as being androgynous in nature/stature as it could pertain to both men and women. I guess one could surmise that, as a man, Ol' Abe failed to recognize the limitations of such lofty aspirations.

Have a lovely day, Ms. Zemirah.

Thank you, Slatten,

In this day of t*********rism, nothing can be taken for granted.

Abraham Lincoln couldn't have begun to envision the upended Pandora's box set loose upon our nation.

I agree with you that since science as a discipline came into being, science and religion have co-existed, but as God created science and can supersede it anytime and in any way he wishes. they are not and cannot ever be equal.

I'll erect a fuller background to justify the title today, as I was inexplicably deterred yesterday.

Enjoy your weekend.

As Rodney Stark writes in his new book, "For the Glory of God," "every educated person" of Columbus's time, especially Christian clergy, "knew the earth was round." More than 800 years before Columbus's voyage, Bede, the church historian, taught this, as did Hildegard of Bingen and Thomas Aquinas. The title of the most popular medieval text on astronomy was Sphere, not exactly what you would call a book that said the earth was flat.

The ancient Greeks knew the Earth was round, and had calculated approximately how big it was.

The person who thought to scientifically explore for the right gas to put a person to sleep before surgery had gleaned for the story of Creation that God put Adam to sleep before He created Eve. Thank you Lord for your written words of creation and the scientist who read them and was made altruistic and smart enough to discover ether, There is no way I would have had my surgery being awake.

Thank God indeed, for his ever present mindfulness, compassion and mercy toward those whom He has created.

Excerpt: "There is no conflict between the ideal of religion and the ideal of science, but science is opposed to theological dogmas because science is founded on fact." ---Nikola Tesla

It's a shame religion and science tend to be portrayed as always in contention with each other because, deconstructed, they can serve complementary purposes. Sure, religion is more rooted in the pursuit of t***h while science is a system of fact-based conjecture, but that doesn't mean they necessarily have to be mutually exclusive.

What I see is that what ever is the legacy power structure, either culturally or politically, those who control it, will always be hostile to new ideas and new ways of thinking. I do not believe that Religion is to be condemned out of hand for being openly hostile to Copernicus and the rest of the new scientific knowledge coming out rapidly during the Renaissance up through the 19th century.

After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, through the dark ages, and until the Renaissance, the Monasteries of the Church were the keepers of all Scientific, Mathematic, and Historic knowledge in Western Europe. To think that any entity in that position would not be hostile to sudden new knowledge which threatened it's idea monopoly is naive. Even an atheist group would feel the same way.

A real accomplishment to find such an essay..

Let us read the post Slatts gave us..

Now, everyone knows that for centuries the home of education was in monasteries built by roman Catholics..

Other notes..

Columbus had a map,,

Columbus was the poorest excuse for a Christian you can find.. one of the cruelest and most self serving hustlers in world history..

Columbus' main goal was to rob enough gold from the inhabitants in order to finance another "crusade" in the Holyland to k**l Muslims.
