Charles Durning was not only a talented singer, dancer and actor, he was a decorated WWII Veteran*. That scene is one of my favorite from any musical. The governor he was lampooning was former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe. The chicken ranch scandal may well have played a part in Bill Clements being elected to replace Briscoe. In 1979, Clements became the first Republican Governor of Texas since Reconstruction.

*For his valor and for the wounds he received during the war, Durning was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart Medals. Additional awards included the Army Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one bronze service star, and the World War II Victory Medal. His badges included the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Badge with Rifle Bar, and Honorable Service Lapel Pin.

Durning received the French National Order of the Legion of Honor from the French consul in Los Angeles in April 2008.

Durning played a great role as a Medal of Honor winner from the war in a very poignant episode of NCIS a while back. It remains my favorite of the series. If you can, keep an eye out for it as a re-run.

It is so worth seeing if the opportunity arises as it much better watched than being read. Durning, as usual, is outstanding.

Very funny and a great actor and military man. Your comments reminded me of my first TDCJ unit was the Dolph Briscoe unit in Dilly, Tx. The place was totally corrupt. Warden G. was an inmate warden big time. Think when we had our third r**t he was finally forced to resign. Couldn't t***sfer out of there fast enough.
