That is exactly what Watergate was and Nixon’s only crime was just that...protecting his loyal employees who were dreadfully misguided. We went to England while that was happening and the English loved Nixon, couldn’t understand what we were doing.
One of the reporters who blew the thing out of proportion was the son of the Rosenbergs. He was adopted and therefore had a new name. Strange events?
I find that fascinating. I remember how h**ed Nixon was. I am reading two books right now The Russians, and The New Russians. Both from the same author about the Soviets in the 1970s, then the second book towards the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Anyway the Author describes the feelings of Russians toward Nixon and Watergate. The Russians were mystified. What was the big deal ? They could not understand what the big fuss was. They liked Nixon and saw it as they would if it were a power struggle in their own country. They basically thought that some other powerful leader was trying to over throw Nixon and the charges were false and only for window dressing. They never thought that Nixon would be put out of power.
