With groundwater being depleted faster than it can be replenished you’d think they would invest more in storage and technology to convert saltwater to fresh. The technology already exists and is used on ships and by Saudi Arabia.

They are doing this. Salt water to fresh water. Starting to replenish some aquifers by using toilet to tap water (A term I don't like: how about reverse osmosis/filtered/purified water.) But it makes me wonder what they do with all the crap they take out of the water.

Seems your comment~~”This would mean creating new lakes, deepening existing lakes, and maybe even storing it in underground aquifers.” is a very good suggestion.. You would think Cali would consider such or should have by now anyway...Both seem viable and well worth the investment..

Land subsidence has reduced the capacity of major under ground aquifers in critical parts of California

California is not broke by any means. In the last 8 years the state eliminated a chronic $25 billion deficit generated a $ten billion rainy day fund, a $6 billon surplus from 2018 and moved up to the fifth largest economy among nations

Maybe the subsidence is from all the oil that has been drilled out. (I have a bridge for sale you might be interested in.)

Land subsidence hasn't reduced aquifers capacity. Subsidence IS the result of depleting the aquifers. Geez, what a Maroon!

Aw heck bg, carrying 400 billion in bond debt means nothing to them.. Why not add a bit for a truly good cause??

The states multi billionaires cold toss in a billion each and wipe that out and not even be phased. From 1911 to 1966 the state built roads tunnels highways. All seven bridges that span SF bay and their modern day replacements. countless libraries, the California water project the most ambitious in the world and 300 community, college, and university campuses. It all came to an end in 1966 when the people elected a divorced Hollywood has been B actor to be governor of the state. When completed in the mid 60's there were 20 million people sucking on the water system today 40 million are sucking on the same system . Every river in the state has been dammed and had their original dams raised. The citizens owe much to our predecessors for their selflessness in building such infrastructure for future generations. Our dance with the conservative devil seems to be over as the Republican party has reached third party status

Yes we are in a period of G****l C*****g. If the rate of cooling continues, by 2024 Canada and the Northern third of the United States may be in an Ice Age. This would result in a massive food shortage. Of course on God knows what the Global Temperature will be in 2024. The best we can do know is allow water from the Sacramento River to again flow to California's Central Valley. I know that when the water to the Central Valley was turned off, most of the trees died, but at least water can now be dumped down the wells to put water back in the Central Valley aquifer instead of sending most of the excess to the Pacific Ocean.

Water from the snow pack must flow through the delta in to the bay. Fresh water from the delta supplies drinking water for 23 million people If fresh water wasn't allowed to flow through salt water intrusion would destroy that source. The aquafers in the central valley have lost half their capacity to land subsidence during the five year drought

Exactly Rose. If only the continual propaganda of "C*****e C****e" would stop, governments could focus on real solutions to real problems like ground water depletion. I saw a news story where a farmer was rotating crops to increase the fertility of the soil. Unfortunately, the background reason was to Reduce CO2 Emissions! Good Grief. The "scientist" interviewed claimed that the methods this farmer used would increase the plant growth that would then capture more CO2 and secure it in the ground..!..?... What logic is that? Plants NEED CO2. So we have more luxurious plant growth to DECREASE more plant growth???? The answer to me is to spew out as much CO2 as we can, AND clean up pollution, refill our aquifers, and a multitude of other beneficial needs vs chasing the C*****e C****e boogieman.
