Redistribution of income has been taking place since 1980, when the top 1% already had a large piece of the pie (7%).
Then they took a second piece (7% more).
Then they took a third piece (7% more).
That’s over a trillion dollars a year of after-tax income that would be going to the other 99% if it weren’t for 30 years of tax cuts and deregulation.
If the median household income had kept pace with the economy since 1970, it would now be nearly $92,000, not $50,000.

How do wealthy Americans respond to this? They argue that the top earners pay most of the income tax. But federal income tax is only a small part of the burden on the middle class. Based on data from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, the total of all state and local taxes, social security taxes, and excise taxes (gasoline, alcohol, tobacco) consumes 21% of the annual incomes of the poorest half of America. For the richest 1% of Americans, the same taxes consume 7% of their incomes. Furthermore, the richest people pay most of the federal income taxes because they’ve made ALMOST ALL the new income over the past 30 years. As productivity has risen 80%, average overall wages have remained flat.
Wealthy people also claim that opportunity exists for everyone, if only they work hard. But an American born in 1970 in the bottom economic quintile had only a 17% chance of making it into the top two quintiles. Data shows that much of Europe has more economic mobility than the United States.
Wealthy people also claim that they’ve earned wh**ever they have. But they’ve made their fortunes with considerable help from society. Government-funded research, infrastructure growth, national security, and property laws have largely benefited rich individuals and corporations. DARPA (the Internet), NIH (medicine), and NSF and NASA (science) have laid a half-century foundation for profit-seeking corporations.
At the time of the American Revolution, Thomas Paine noted that everything “beyond what a man’s own hands produce” came to him from society, and therefore “he owes on every principle of justice, of gratitude, and of civilization, a part of that accumulation back again to society from whence the whole came.”
Over a hundred years ago, Teddy Roosevelt, facing a plague of ine******y not unlike today, stressed that “Great corporations exist only because they are created and safeguarded by [democratic] institutions; and it is therefore our right and our duty to see that they work in harmony with these institutions.”
Elizabeth Warren recently said “There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody.”
Even GE’s Jeffrey Immelt concurred, saying that “government spending…prepares the way for new industries that thrive for generations.”
The 1% need to take responsibility for their 30 years of good fortune. A progressive federal income tax is a good start.

Am I to have half my income taxed to support your c*******t ideas? People of little sk**ls have 8-10 children. They qualify for a $5000, or more tax credit which comes back to them in cash. I learned a long time ago that corruption in both parties is going to be the downfall of America. The rich are c***ts, and yes the poor are c***ts (I've seen it with my own eyes. I know one public aid recipient who just bought a house cash but still gets food stamps and Medicaid because she hides all her income.) This leaves the middle class alone and flapping in the wind. They make too much money for programs, but not enough to stuff all of their assets in an off-shore bank.

Until the corruption leaves the system, all efforts to correct income ine******y will fail. The rich will simply run off with their money and the rest of the population will lose value to the point where their taxes mean nothing.

I think single, young people on their own, or divorced people who pay child support, for instance, should also qualify for an earned income credit. This would stop the whole "have children for the tax break" problem.

Also, tax loopholes for the rich need to stop.

Thirdly, if a couple "lives together", but are not married, their income still needs to be considered JOINT. I know of way too many women who live with men but only report their own income when applying for programs. This allows families making $60,000 a year to still receive government programs for their children, because the mother and father of those children are not legally married.

And finally, attention needs to be put on the ignored middle class. It's not only the rich and poor here!

Redistribution has been taking place since 1913.

During the Civil War Congress passed the Revenue Act of 1861 which included a tax on personal incomes to help pay war expenses. The tax was repealed ten years later. However, in 1894 Congress enacted a flat rate Federal income tax, which was ruled unconstitutional the following year by the U.S. Supreme Court because it was a direct tax not apportioned according to the population of each state. The 16th amendment, ratified in 1913, removed this objection by allowing the Federal government to tax the income of individuals without regard to the population of each State.

We would not be in the state of affairs we now find ourselves in IF the government wisely spent only the money required to run the legitimate affairs the government was set up to do. But that won't happen because, IF the politicians decide to return to the Constitutional government, they will lose the amassed power, they will lose v**es because too many people have paid for them in v**es and money to do as THEY say; IOW, too many politicians are CORRUPT, and SHOULD BE v**ed out, but won't be because their supporters WANT them there to be corrupt because they benefit from that corruption.

Our federal government should not be sending tax dollars to foreign countries. It should not be paying out welfare payments. It should not be bailing out banks, car companies, or any other private industry. It should not be spending tax dollars to dress up their fancy offices. It should not be spending tax dollars to travel. It should not be spending tax dollars for their vacations. It should call in all loans it has made to foreign countries. It should call in our military from all around the world.......we cannot afford to be the world police any more. Our federal government should not be allowing i*****l a***ns into our country and DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT BE AWARDING THEM TAXPAYER PAID FOR GOODIES.

Our government is the primary cause of all of our distress. Private industry is NOT the culprit. I know many are brainwashed by unions that MUST place blame on the "bosses", but I wish Americans would start using their OWN brains to figure things out. Our government is our prison warden. Like it or not, that is the case.

Yes, the Republicans won't end the corruption of the rich or the businesses because they will lose v**es. The Democrats won't end the corruption of the government programs or the unions because they will lose v**es.

It seems to me we have the bloods vs the crypts here. That may sound harsh, but that is what I feel our two political parties have turned into: gangs. Gone are the leaders who want to compromise or speak for their own constituents. The powers-that-be are run by special interest groups, banks, and the all-powerful "get that v**e no matter what it costs".

It takes an unpatriotic, greedy, self-centered a&&h0(# to renounce citizenship rather than pay taxes in support of the fiscal responsibilities of the country. That is probably one of the most un-American things I can think of. Everything this country does requires funds and your taxes as well as mine are used to support this country's operations. Most of us that believe in this country don't mind paying taxes to support those efforts. A shallow, greedy, me, me, me person doesn't deserve use of our good roads and bridges to travel on, a safe air traffic system to fly in, a strong military to provide our security, and the freedom to go when and where you please without restrictions. I say good riddance to the greedy bastards that don't do anything to aid this country, but take everything they can out of the economy and send it off shore to avoid their American responsibilities. Other countries are welcome to accept their free-loading asses, as they're doing nothing but taking from this country.

I also know people who are on public assistance, and they don't drive luxury cars, don't have 8 to 10 kids, and don't get $5000 tax refunds. Some of the people I know work every day but don't make enough to fully support their families. Sure, there are some c***ters in the system, but c***ters of systems can be found at all levels when it comes to government funds. All one has to do is look at the subsidies being paid to rich farmers.

You are repeating lies that you've heard from Rush the Limpboy, faux news and other h**e mongering talk show hosts whose main purpose is to divide the country with h**eful, racially directed rhetoric aimed at minorities. No, you didn't state anything about race in your post, but the dog whistle about welfare is loud and clear as this is the word used by h**ers and is mostly associated with minorities.

We have had that "progressive" income tax and socialist force and redistribution since WAY before 1980. America is heading down the tubes because of all that. Actually, so is virtually this entire planet.

http://www.usdebtclock.org/ today shows over $17.5 TRILLION "National Debt" plus over $129.2 TRILLION in "Unfunded Future Liabilities", NONE of which was signed for by any "citizen", yet supposedly the Rulers claim that we citizens liable for all that. It amounts to $1.266 MILLION PER TAXPAYER. Are YOU ready to pay your share?

We can be pretty darned sure that "the rich" didn't create one bit of all that impossible debt burden, but you and the rest of the criminal progressives want the Producers to pay for it, while you collect your redistributed welfare and food stamps and medical care and unemployment?

You people are not real Americans, but you are certainly the Enemy, using GOVERNment to do your dirty work because you can't make it work without stealing from your neighbors. Go plumb to hell!

The rich that c***t and the poor that c***t are going to cause a domino affect that benefits no one. I don't feel you can blame one and not the other. Two wrongs have never made a right.

Tax reform for the rich should be high priority, as well as removing tax loopholes and eliminating gobs of waste in the system. People who are married should not be punished by forcing to file their incomes "joint", while those who have families simply "living together" don't have to. Jobs other than part-time and temp jobs need to be created, more money needs to be put into discovering an energy source that is still affordable but does not pollute, and both parties need to buckle down, face their faults, and get rid of the rampant corruption in all of our government systems.

I suggest you research tax rates pre reagan and post reagan just for starters. Then it might be good to get some information from somewhere other than where you are getting it, which sounds suspiciously to be FOX, Linbaugh. Beck, Hanety et al. Have a lovely day :-P :-P

That is probably one of the most un-American things I can think of. Has it ever occurred to you that excess taxation is not Constitutional, and a government that exceeds its responsibilities in order to cause pain to citizens DESERVES to lose that taxpayerEverything this country does requires funds and your taxes as well as mine are used to support this country's operations. Surely you do know that this country's operations consist solely of 3 things, and nothing more: foreign affairs, protection for foreign attack/invasion, and maintenance of infrastructure. EVERYTHING else it does is NOT CONSTITUTIONAL and every American should be appalled our government is wasting so much of our money? Most of us that believe in this country don't mind paying taxes to support those efforts.I h**e to tell you this, but MOST of us don't agree with your assessment. MOST of us think our government is shoddy, greedy, and wasteful, not to mention anti-American A shallow, greedy, me, me, me person doesn't deserve use of our good roads and bridges to travel on, a safe air traffic system to fly in, a strong military to provide our security, and the freedom to go when and where you please without restrictions.Excuse me! Did you say "without restrictions?" You mean without drivers' license, without vehicle registration, without vehicle insurance, going desired speed? I say good riddance to the greedy bastards that don't do anything to aid this country, but take everything they can out of the economy and send it off shore to avoid their American responsibilities. Other countries are welcome to accept their free-loading asses, as they're doing nothing but taking from this country. This is just too good to pass up! So, you are prepared to do without the jobs they provide? Prepared to do without new cars, new homes, repairs to vehicles, homes, etc.? Prepared to do without medical schools and doctors, oh, and hospitals? I must say I admire people of so much principle. Now if those principles you have could only educate you, you'd be well off indeed.I also know people who are on public assistance, and they don't drive luxury cars, don't have 8 to 10 kids, and don't get $5000 tax refunds. Our government is deep into crime

You are ingrained with r****m, deeply so, either by the media, by your parents, by your spouse, or by some other person who h**es you, and they have blinded you to reality. All of us know people who deserve help and we don't mind helping them, but you are too ignorant and democrat-blind to accept the t***h about anyone being decent except your own rotten self and your own rotten democrat party, most of whom belong in a prison cell. THEY ARE THE CAUSE OF AMERICANS LEAVING AMERICA - they can't find it any more. Neither can I.
