Prince - Great Guitarist? Discuss...

This was brought to my attention this AM by a video blogger I follow. I don't know how most of you feel about Prince. There's no question he has some songs that I'm a fan of, and I've seen him play guitar solos with a lot of flair so I watched it...(didn't see it originally in 2004 because I don't do awards shows)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFNW5F8K9Y
Now here's the thing. I certainly wouldn't rank it in the top 10 or maybe even 20 guitar solos - BUT it does seem to make it clear that he was pretty damn good. I actually found him rated #33 on a list of top 100 guitarists (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/100-greatest-guitarists-153675/curtis-mayfield-2-152544/). I know this is a little redundant, since many of you have posted links to great guitarists before, but hit me with your best shot(s) while I think of some of my favorites, like Frank Zappa, Brian May, Angus Young, Carlos Santana, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Jimmie Page, Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Jimi Hendrix, and of course Stevie Ray Vaughan (God there are so many greats!). I don't play...well, maybe air guitar...but I really enjoy listening to talented musicians.

I like Chet Atkins, Les Paul, B.B. King and Mark Knopfler among others.

If you've never seen Chasing Sound its about Les Paul and the impact he had on the music industry.

Forgot about Prince. I didn't like his music and I'm not much of a musician so I can't really say if he's good or not. I'm sure he was better than most people though.

Prince? Right up there with Michael Jackson and Barack Hussein Obama. All frauds, not at all as presented to be. All sicko phonies, especially that Wacko Jacko, although Obama is just as revolting to me as Wacko Jacko. At least Obama waited for the boys to grow up before he had sex with them.

Prince was odd yes but likening him to MJ and BO? Ouch! Gotta respect your opinion but on the notoriously evil scale I don't think Prince is even in the ballpark with those 2.

Yeah, you're right, but Prince presented a facade, and frankly, purple rain was his only tolerable opus.
Otherwise, a Prince was a modern court freak.
Wacko Jacko and obama are indeed more Evil.

I can't dance but I get the urge to make a fool of myself when I hear "1999".

I always thought that the only decent song he had was Little Red Corvette. And it would only do in a pinch.

Prince was definitely a good guitarist, but to put him up there with some of the names you mentioned...I dunno. Certainly not Hendrix. I have a soft spot for Jimi cause the things he did, he did first. There are 2 types of guitar players; those that admit that Hendrix influenced them heavily, and those that lie about it.
Chet Atkins is another great innovator in his style of music. His picking sound was so clean there was no room for mistakes...a mistake could easily be heard.
Carlos Santana...Carlos brought a new sound to rock and his running from minors to majors was brilliant, it gave emotion to the music. His Conga section ( I guess that's correct) didn't hurt a thing either.
I think you could call David Gilmore's guitar style mental rock. Even if you weren't stoned, you just wanted to sit back and relax and just...listen.
And let's not leave out Eddie Van Halen. A lot of guitar players I knew said that he just played a bunch of junk, but I noticed that they never did any of it...cause they couldn't
These are about the top five in my book, cause they were first at what they brought to the music scene. Does Prince rank with any of them? Nope. But he WAS a good guitar player. And I suppose you know that he wrote Manic Monday for the Bangles?
His music was better than his lyrics. Him and the vocalist for the Bangles met each other and spent the day looking at each other out of the corner of their eyes. She was and is a beauty though.

Thank you for that maximus. Never would put him with those you named. I think the Rolling Stone article placing him in top 30 is fair. When I went through the list there were so many I'd forgotten about whose music I enjoyed. As you can tell from what I said earlier I'm a huge fan of Joe Walsh, David Gilmour, and Stevie Ray Vaughn but it would be so hard to name a top 5 because there are so many great ones. Just better to enjoy the music.

Both great. I lean towards May between the two.

Can't argue with that. I'd say it just depends on the mood I'm in.
