Luke chapter 19

Verse 1 - 3

Rome ruled Judea. Jerusalem was governed by Rome. The only interest Rome had in Jerusalem was in collecting taxes. Publicans were tax collectors. They could charge any amount of money but Rome required a certain amount. All Judeans hated tax collectors. Zacchaeus was a short man.

Verse 4 - 6

He is not liked by anybody, but he just wants to look at Jesus. He runs ahead of a road Jesus is walking on and climbs a tree. When Jesus gets to the tree, He informs Zacchaeus that He will stay at his house.

Verse 7

A little faith goes a long way. We are all sinners and our righteousness is like filthy rags.

Verse 8 - 10

When you repent, you should change your behavior. You should not only stop doing wrong, and start doing right, you should make restitution. Jesus is more concerned with saving the lost, than blessing the saved.

Verse 11 - 27

Similar passages are in Matthew 25:14 - 30. Jesus has been asked how the kingdom of God shall appear. Jesus teaches this parable. A certain nobleman went to a distant land to receive a kingdom, and then to return. His citizens hate him and reject his authority. He gives each of his servants a pound. When he returns, he examines his servants to see what they earned by trading. The first servant gained ten pounds from the pound his master gave him. The nobleman let’s him reign over ten cities. The second gained five pounds and the nobleman let’s him reign over five cities. A man came up that did nothing with what his master had given him. He faults the nobleman for getting something for nothing. The nobleman faults the servant for doing nothing. He takes the pound and gives it to the servant that gained ten pounds. Verse 26 is repeated in Matthew 13:12 and Mark 4:25. God is in control. He has every right to tell you how to live the life He gave you.The only thing we have from God is His word. How can we be saved while ignoring every sermon Christ preached, parable He taught, and miracle He performed? We better do something with what God has left.

Verse 28 - 40

The triumphal entry is also in Matthew 21:1 - 11, Mark 11:1 - 11, John 12:12 - 15, and Zechariah 9:9. In less than a week, Jesus would be crucified.

Verse 41 - 44

As the crowd is celebrating, Jesus is crying. As we sing and dance while we worship, Jesus is crying as we continue to murder our own children.

Verse 45 - 47

Read Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11.
