I read somewhere years ago that Wilhelm Diesel manufactured his original engine to run on vegetable oil and it was retrofitted to accept petroleum product. I'll have to hunt around to see if I can find that and post it.

I would be interested in that...

I knew a fella back home who ran his quad/tractor on some sort of homebrew...

It was just for getting around the houseplot... But he had about five acres...

We know it is very easy to run diesel engines on biofuel. Some use old cooking oil from fast food restaurants.

We also had electric vehicles over 100 years ago. There really isn't anything new under the sun. Just recycled old ideas. Oil won out because it gave the most bang for the buck. It was portable, concentrated, efficient, and inexpensive. It still is, but technology will, no doubt, make improvements in other energy sources. I'm looking forward to hydrogen power ( which is very explosive and dangerous) or cold fusion engines (which won't happen in our lifetime). The Japanese were the masters of taking someone's technology and slightly improving it. Now the Chinese just steal technology. Germans develop and use the best engineering possible. Who will come up with the next best alternative energy source? The United States if the politicians get out of the way, reduce unnecessary regulations, and quit supporting socialism. The only thing socialism improves is at making everyone worse-off and more miserable over the long-term.
