Having just lost one of the grandest and most wonderous monuments ever built by man, one would think that we would be more hesitant to destroy others...

Why should we preserve all those monuments to Jim Crow in the south? It's not like that is something to be proud of.

Want to memorialize the Confederate dead? Put the statues and commemorations into Confederate cemeteries or museums. That they reside in front of county courthouses all over the south is a constant reminder of the the institutionalization of 2nd class citizenship for a large segment of the population of those states. Those statues coincide with the rise of the KKK in the south. Folks ignore the true intention of those statues....intimidation of the freed s***es and their offspring.

If destroying those monuments doesn't erase history, then what's the big deal?

Some have stood for a century. I did not say to destroy them. I think cemeteries, museums, original donors, private owners: all can put up these memorials on their own land and in collections.

Toppling statues is nothing new.

Of course removing these statues from public lands does not alter history, nor will history be forgotten. Sometimes toppling them is an act of freedom and liberation.

https://mic.com/articles/83227/a-stunning-map-shows-all-the-lenin-statues-that-ve-been-toppled-in-ukraine#.JiHCNzJwg

In Russia many statues of Lenin and Stalin were toppled, as in Iraq with Saddam and signified the hoped for end of tyranny. Many of the Confederate statues signify the same tyranny. Here's part of the dedication for 'Silent Sam', the toppled statue at UNC:

"I trust I may be pardoned for one allusion, howbeit it is rather personal. One hundred yards from where we stand, less than ninety days perhaps after my return from Appomattox, I horse-whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds, because upon the streets of this quiet village she had publicly insulted and maligned a Southern lady, and then rushed for protection to these University buildings where was stationed a garrison of 100 Federal soldiers. I performed the pleasing duty in the immediate presence of the entire garrison, and for thirty nights afterwards slept with a double-barrel shot gun under my head."

I like that idea

But I am against destroying the statues/monuments outright...

Thought: Should we destroy all of the old Aztec Temples as well? They represent s***ery and human sacrifice....
Stone hedge should probably go as well... And the pyramids...
The Great Wall of China literally was built with the bodies of thousands of s***es/vassals... Tear it down?

At what point do we stop fearing our past and start being fascinated with it?

Always fun to talk with you WCS...
Hope you are well...

I am well thank you. I hope you are too.

I'm not in favor of destroying any of the Confederate monuments. I am in favor of removing them from the seats of government.

I might be less inclined to remove them even from there if, and it's a big if, we as a country did not fear talking about our past. Most folks still don't accept that it was only 50 years ago that some Americans were treated as 2nd class citizens by their governments. Those statues are a close reminder of that time, and within living memory of some of our citizens.

Perhaps if we were further removed from that painful t***h those statues would not draw the attention they do and could be treated as some of the other memorials to the past that you mention.

I also enjoy our conversations.

I think we are in complete agreement here...

I am of course less familiar with the history and culture of your nation than you are...

But nothing you said strikes me as unreasonable or bigoted...

Sort of like putting all of the N**i stuff in a museum to be studied, learned and remembered...No?

Where to draw the line?
It does seem like a lot of movements go overboard these days...

I am pretty good...
Windy day...
Tied a coat to my baby's stroller and watched it sail a good hundred feet
I have a lot more fun with the kid when the wife sleeps late
