When the goal has been achieved. They got their scalp and she probably saved her grandchildren from radical harassment. She doesn't get secret service protection, only US Marshall protection. That didn't work so well for Justice Scalia. Somehow his detail was removed just prior to his trip to Texas.

It is too late to prosecute the original crime, but a public official is still liable for crimes in office. So resigning stops that prosecution
