Rep. Ilhan Omar says living in Trump’s America ‘is an everyday assault'

Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Somali-refugee-turned-Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota, said in a published interview Friday that living in the U.S. under President Trump's administration is "an everyday assault."

Omar, 37, is best-known for the enmity she's stirred up over allegations American lawmakers supportive of Israel have been bought off. In a Vogue Arabia interview, Omar lamented her difficulties with living in America during the Trump era.

“It’s an everyday assault. Every day, a part of your identity is threatened, demonized, and vilified. Trump is tapping into an ugly part of our society and freeing its ugliness. It’s been a challenge to try to figure out how to continue the inclusion; how to show up every day and make sure that people who identify with all the marginalized identities I carry, feel represented," Omar said.

"It’s t***sitioning from the idea of constantly resisting to insisting in upholding the values we share — that this is a society that was built on the idea that you could start anew. And what that celebrates is immigrant heritage," she said.

Omar and her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1995 from Somalia as refugees, settling in Arlington, Va.

We need more brave voices to follow Omar's lead in speaking out about the negative influence of Israel lobby groups like AIPAC. It a relief to me to finally hear a government official supporting the position of Palestinian rights.

Whether or not you agree with her, it doesn't take much guts for her to express her beliefs while sitting in the USA. The very worst that might happen, is that she could get v**ed down by Israeli supporters on her next run for office. What takes real guts, is for someone in the Palestinian Territories to speak out in favor of a 2 state solution with mutually recognized borders. Considering how dissenters are treated in much of the Arab world, he/she would be lucky to be able to "Get out of Dodge by Sundown"

When is a religion not a religion? When it’s goals are geopolitical and it’s methods are silencing or superseding by political conquest all other ideologies.

I am all for freedom of religion, but when one’s religion expressly condones deception for the sake of conquest, that is, to put it mildly, stepping way over the line.
