After watching what happened during 2016 e******n ... (show quote)

In early America, politicians didn’t nominate themselves, they had to be nominated by others who could attest to their integrity. I believe this is at the root of the symptoms you are referring to PR.

The power hungry are the last people in America who should be elected to office. So there’s your answer- their hunger for power overrides their senses of fear of retaliation. So, if It is true that only the power hungry seek office, then how much more power hungry are they who seek office in today’s political environment.

Of course, that’s a generalization. Desperate times demand desparate measures. Thus in walks Donald J. Trump. Is there anyone who would deny he has an above average ego? Typically such is frowned upon; but again, these are desperate times... Hillary was “that close” to becoming... you know what, and I shudder to use her name in the same sentence as that title!

So, is Donald Trump power hungry, egotistical, desperate as the rest of us sane people who shudder at the idea of Hillary in power, or some combination of all of the above?

In my estimation, I still lean toward him being just what we needed at this point in time. That doesn’t mean I would say he is best suited for all times. But in today’s political atmosphere, the only trait I can think of that could overcome the fear of retaliation (for lack of a better term) for holding office, without being power hungry, would be by a desperate egotist who sincerely believed he/she could get the job done in the face of such strong opposition.

Which kinda brings to mind David and Goliath. I’m not saying Trump is a David, I’m saying David was an example of a leader who wasn’t power hungry, but he was in a desperate situation, and what made the difference in David over others was faith. I would say the difference between the men is that President Trump’s Faith is more in himself than God (I could be wrong but I don’t think so) and his desperation for our country is legitimate.

That’s how I’d answer your question anyway, of who would want it. It certainly isn’t for the common person, special talents are required.

I agree with you,Tommy....Honestly i didnt think that President Trump had a chance to win e******n...Ididnt take him seriously until he started talking about immigration...Being an immigrant myself i was happy to hear that he is about LEGAL immigration!!!!!...I also cringe at his tweets sometimes, but he is doing what he promised to do....Obama had nice speeches and all but he did nothing about immigration and other things too...He started caging illegal kids, but everybody blames President Trump for it...He also started separating children and everybody still blames President Trump for it...And even if i have some problems with President Trump sometimes, all this BS that Dems are giving to President Trump is going to make me to v**e for President Trump again in 2020!!!!

Excellent assessment of the situation...
And of Trump...

I would add that, his ego aside, Trump appears to have a love for his nation and understanding of what is needed to fix it...

He is also not afraid to say what needs to be said on the international stage...

Totally agree! (Except for me I’d say he got my attention by promising accountability, that was refreshing. Hopefully soon.)

Thank you for your comments Kyle.

Personally, I would like to see President Trump more focused on the Constitution. I can overlook his brash tweets, but I’d suggest he was more careful at being factually correct or at least admit when he was speaking from “feelings”. Kind of like how you remind us all to say we’re speaking in generalities when that is the case. I can say with certain, I couldn’t begin to fill his shoes, nor would want to, nor would accept it!

Ego, stupidity, p***e, greed, patriotism, power, concern, ... probably all go into the mix for each candidate.

My teensy excursion into "politics" was to run and win the presidency of a local club. I did so because I saw a need to refocus our direction. After 3 years of hell, I found out the real reason was Stupidity. When asked to run again, I did not politely decline, but decline I did.

For national positions, why not run? After you get elected, you need not do anything for a lifelong pension far beyond the earning power of most of us. All you need is a thick skin and ability to ignore phone calls.

Here in flyover country, we look at President Trump's brashness as being a typical New Yorker. I know this is a stereotype, but he seems to fit it. While this may not normally be a good trait for a diplomat, it is good for a negotiator. We've had diplomats and politicians in charge for a long time, maybe it's good to try a different approach as the other way hasn't worked out very well lately.
