Look at the Democrats of the JFK era and then look at the Democrats of today.
Michael Goodwin has a knack for succinct, spot-on commentary, and he is right on target in this column.

I believe that November 2020 is going to prove a rude awakening for the Democratic Party.

FREE DINNER!
As everybody knows, “There ain’t no free lunch!” Not for you and me but there is one for Congress. It says so in our Constitution’s Article I, Section 8: “Congress shall have the power…to coin Money…” No limit is specified! Free Dinner!
To spend, you and I need income but Congress, needing no income, can buy anything and everything for sale in USD with its magic keyboard. Congress’ only buying problem comes when it tries to buy stuff that is in short supply. Then, prices rise and inflation rears its ugly head, making life difficult for everybody.
So, in practice, there is a limit to Congress’ spending because the rest of the world is also spending and there can be too much spending and not enough goods for sale. But, lately, goods are plentiful and production is being reduced as unemployment rates increase and millions of people are without steady, well-paid employment. Our problem now is not inflation but creeping deflation!
With automation, computers, and robotics, that situation is getting worse. As the costs of housing, healthcare, and college education are rising, prospects for the next generations appear to be hopeless. What should Congress do?
Congress has the power to spend and spending on our needs is exactly the answer! Let Congress buy available goods and services to provide those needs! So, what are our needs? We always need more and better infrastructure. We need to improve our roads and bridges, rivers and dams, an endless list! If we lack energy, Congress can pay people to make solar and wind farms, nuclear and geothermal plants, etc., just like it paid for the Hoover Dam, the TVA, etc. Why can’t Congress pay for everyone’s healthcare, as it does for soldiers? It can also pay for free education, starting with nurseries, day-care, and Pre-K, on up to PhD.
All we need is a Congress that is willing to spend on our everyday needs the same way it spends on war needs. So, whence cometh cash for aircraft carriers? We have a dozen carriers, complete with airplanes, service ships, crews, port facilities, supplies, and fifty years of operating expenses! Trillions have been spent on war! Wherever that defense money came from, let’s get some more for our other needs! As our needs are almost endless, it’s great that Congress has no spending limit. That sounds like a good deal. A New Deal! Let’s call it a Green New Deal!
