FEC complaint: Ocasio-Cortez may have violated campaign finance laws to pay boyfriend
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) may be in some legal trouble.
The Coolidge Reagan Foundation, a Washington D.C. based conservative group, has filed a complaint with the Federal E******n Commission (FEC) alleging that Ocasio-Cortez illegally paid her boyfriend with campaign funds through a political action committee (PAC) during her congressional race.

The complaint
The Foundation is being represented by Attorney Dan Backer. He believes that the t***sference of money to Ocasio-Cortez’s boyfriend, Riley Roberts, may have violated campaign finance laws.
“It is totally legal, as a candidate, to hire family members, people you know to work for you,” said Backer. “But they didn’t do that.”
Backer finds it suspicious that Roberts was paid through a third party, rather than directly.
“Instead of paying him directly, they paid him through an intermediary — in order to obscure the fact that they paid him,” he said. “The FEC should investigate and find out if that’s the case. That’s the allegation.”
What happened?
The wrongdoing outlined in the complaint is based on evidence found in FEC records. The Foundation claims that the Brand New Congress LLC made a $3,000 payment to Roberts in August 2017 for “consulting work.” Next, the PAC, on August 27, paid the BNC LLC $6,191.32 for “strategic consulting.” And then, in September 2017, the BNC LLC made another $3,000 payment to Roberts, referring to him as a “marketing consultant.”
“Thus, over the span of a little more than a month, Cortez’s campaign committee paid just over $6,000 to Brand New Congress PAC, while its affiliated LLC turned around and paid her boyfriend $6,000,” the FEC complaint stated.
Accusation denied
Since this dubious t***saction became public, the PAC has denied the allegation. Fox reported that Zeynab Day, BNC’s communications director, said that “Roberts ‘is a professional digital marketing and growth consultant who specializes in social media presence and subscriber engagement’ and his hiring was based ‘on his experience managing successful advertising and social media campaigns.'”

She added that Roberts “was hired through a 2 month trial period, beginning on August 3, 2017 and worked through the end of September, 2017.” And, she said, his “Services to the Brand New Congress PAC consisted of advertising strategies for potential growth, developing metrics, and aiding in execution of strategy to increase brand awareness for the PAC as a whole.”
Maybe. But maybe Ocasio-Cortez just found a way to get her boyfriend paid. We’ll have to follow this one.
