I have been watching the services dedicating the opening of the new 9/11 Memorial. Somewhere in there I heard that over 90 different nationalities of Americans died in the collapse of the twin towers. Not once did I hear the terms liberal, conservative, black, white, Christian, Jew, democrat, republican, native or immigrant, etc. Everyone was honored and spoken of in terms of being an American...nothing else. That is as it should be.

I kept in mind as I followed the ceremonies honoring our country and its' multi-faceted population, that a house or nation divided can/will not stand.

Then, my thoughts immediately turned to the political atmosphere of the nation as exhibited on OPP and how far we have to go as a people.

I love my country and cling to hope for its' future.

We used to come together as Americans to solve problems. It always worked well in the past. What happened to Americans?

Of one thing I am certain: the people with hysteric attitudes expressed here on OPP are actually only a very tiny slice of the population of America. Every time I mention one of the topics discussed here to colleagues and friends, the vast majority of whom are conservative, active and retired senior military officers, they scratch their heads in disbelief. The military has not been gutted; we still have the strongest military in the world by a large margin. There is no "purge" going on in the military. We are not on the verge of martial law or confiscation of our guns, despite what some radicals here believe. The ACA is NOT socialism; in fact, there isn't a damn thing socialistic about it.

We have plenty of reasons to continue loving our country and being optimistic about its future. Democracy and capitalism are still alive and well and continue to be the best way to run a country.

I'm still proud to be an American. I wish everybody here was as well.

It is my opinion that we have become such a pluralistic and mult-cultural nation that many have become uncomfortable.

My son jokingly asked me, when I finally joined the rest of the world on the internet, "Who drug you into the 21st century, d**gging and screaming?" I thought about it and realized how slow I was to accept societal changes in my life, at times. I do not figure to be the only one.

As Floyd Brown I believe said the other day, in part, it comes down to a matter of "trust" -- and sadly, we don't. Perhaps, it all needs to be done in baby steps, what kind of baby steps, I have absolutely NO idea.

I' m with you, RetNavy. It is our love of country that should have us stop and look at how such extreme d******eness is our nation's true and ONLY problem, for all the rest can be taken care of by a functioning government. Partisan war is not something between parties; it is an attack on we the people. The demonizing on both sides is putting explosives in the foundation of our great nation, and those who continue with their h**e rhetoric are part of the demolition crew that will blow this "great experiment" to smithereens.

It is not. True socialism would have been a one payer system. Are you saying the Heritage Foundation came up with a socialist plan. They came up with the basic plan for ACA.

Okay, then. Explain to all of us dummies what exactly is socialistic about the ACA. I don't think you even know what socialism is.

The reason you don't know is that you have no capacity.

No, he is correct, the Affordable Care Act is capitalistic to the bone. It runs on market-based private enterprise providers and insurers. It was designed by a right-wing organization, not a left-wing group. It requires people to be responsible and pay their own way, rather than be lazy and then use the emergency rooms for their care, dumping the costs onto all of us. Now, if you don't understand the terms we are using here, go play and let the grown-ups talk.

Your wrong! The gov mandated Obumma's care forcing everyone who has a middle class job and above to pay higher insurance costs to support the low life. Included are billions of additional taxes to support the mandated t***sfer of wealth. Man! It's amazing how you rats spin, spin, spin. A t***sformation of wealth is socialism. You lied as gain when you said it was a free market. Go the dictionary and look up free market. When gov interferes it is no longer free. How can it be free when gov tells the insurance companies how much profit they can make. Then, tells them if they lose money the gov will put up the losses. Man! your spins just don't hold water.

Unfortunately, it didn't take long for the message of my post to get lost in the maze of political dispute.

Such as it is.
