What is the Governments Job

This subject is thought of differently from both sides of the political spectrum.
I mean is it really the governments job:
To tell me who I can and can not marry?
What I can buy and what I must buy?
How I can buy it?
To help me out when I get let go from my job or help me out because I have kids that I can't afford?
To teach those kids?
To make it easier for me to get a job?
To tell me to get a job when I don't want one?
To make it easier for me to get higher education?
To help me make decisions?
To help me out if those decisions prove to be unwise?
To help me out in my old age because I was not fortunate enough to invest in my future when I was younger?
To punishment me when I do wrong?
To tell me what I should be eating and should not be eating?
To dictate what my behavior should be in my daily life?
To tell me how I can and can't earn my living?
To say who can live next door to me and who can't?
To give me a tax break because I opened a business?
To tell me how to run that business?
To tell me how much I can and should pay the employees of that business?
To tell me that I have to give the employees breaks and lunches?
To give me a tax break because I got married and also because I have kids.
Is this really the job of Government? or is this just something that government just does? I would appreciate your thoughts and insights.

Strictly speaking, the purpose of the government is listed in the preamble. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

There are 5 different things:
First, establish justice.
Second, ensure domestic tranquility.
Third, provide for the common defense.
Fourth, promote the general welfare.
Fifth, secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

People all agree on the third one, but the other four are there, also. Our founding fathers left our laws room to grow, and also put in ways to make it grow slowly.
I can put every one of those things you listed in one or more of these categories. For example, public education falls in the second, fourth and fifth of the reasons.

There was not one thing listed that is the U.S. governments responsible.

people do not agree on number 3 it says "promote" the general welfare and liberals always say to "provide" welfare their is a big difference
