The language police stated back during the Clinton administration. I had a book, entitled "The Language Police," by Diane Ravitch. As I recall, she was connected to the administration in some way. It was written in 2003, and was a criticism of both left-wing and right-wing attempts to stifle the study and expression of views deemed unworthy by those groups.

A history lesson on the coining of the word r****t:
