Growing up in Klamath was quite an adventure. I lived in Fort Klamath and went to school in Chiloquin. The teachers were afraid of their students- Fist fights were not stopped. I saw my 8th grade English teacher get shot twice in the chest by an Indian kid. They took our music teacher out in a straight jacket. One day we were on the bus going to school and T Oats the telephone man stopped us and said we could not go across the Sprague river bridge. They were pulling bodies out of the river and had not covered them up yet. When we got the all clear Sid our bus driver put on her tough face and said "You kids stay in your seats". Needless to say that bus went across the bridge leaning side ways. Us bloodthirsty kids were disappointed because all the bodies were covered up. ,six altogether. Well over the next few weeks bodies kept floating down the river before the sheriffs department got the guts to investigate. The bodies were floating down from a ranch in Beatty where an old man was letting all the Indians in the county party. In the morning who ever was dead got thrown in the river. There were no arrests made and investigation was futile.

Coos bay Tom,

Chiloquin was definitely the wild Wild West. Good thing you got out. Apparently it hasn’t changed much, we were there six years and left 4 yrs. ago.
Did you know Pumpkin and her daughter Penny Uhlman? Did you know Bob Wampler and Harry Kircher? Or the Millers or Jackson’s?
While we were there they set the post office on fire and trashed the community center 3 times. Used to like going to the Pow Wows, but things started getting crazy too many fights.
Glad you got out.

Byronglimish,

A few times on the way to Beaverton, Portland, Bend, Madras and Warm Springs Casino. Like the casinos on the other side of the Cascades.
Met a lady named Jean from Lapine at the Klamoya Casino. Crazy lady used to make my wife and me laugh. She used to take a charter bus from Lapine to the Casino.

I knew the Jacksons . Taylor Day who owns the Chiloquin Family grocery is a good friend of mine. I went to school with the Kirchers and their cousins the Geingers. Aileen Weeks is my stepmother. My grandmother ran the Rapids Cafe on the Williamson river and later Maries cafe on Chocktoot street. Wild times there for sure. What saved me was people who knew me knew I was a skin.

Is there some trial of character involved in becoming a "skin"?

sounds like it could be advantageous.

Oh yes. I lived in Chemult back in the 70s and would drive through LaPine on our way to Redmond to go grocery shopping. At the time LaPine had 350 residents. Now is quite a difference. My Brother in Law Tony Baker and his wife Trina are lifelong residents there. Quite a place. I love that area of Klamath and Deschutes counties.

Used to talk to Taylor when I saw him. I think their daughter got married not to long ago. He owns a lot of property in Chiloquin. Heard her name but never met her (Aileen Weeks). Small world.

You have to be born that way. I can only say there is something that draws natives together. I can't explain it. To most people I look like a White man but I am often asked if I am Indian. I do try to be involved in the native way of life. I have gone to elders breakfasts Summer and winter solstice events and I play the native American flute. I have gone on a few peace marches and I donate to native charitys. I understand rez jargon but don't use it much. I'm just me and have nothing really to prove.

Lapine is getting too many people. The Cascade lakes, Paulina and East lake are still beautiful.

Back in the day, lapine was a rowdy place, it's mellowed out since then.

Tell him Dan the retired cop said hello if he remembers me. We lived on Drake behind the Wamplers property, on the hill. I’m gray haired with a moustache, dark skin, Hispanic/Native American, good looking, lol, with a short little blonde wife also good looking.
Did you know Orthelia Marie Snooks Henthorne? She worked at the casino, short, long black hair, always happy, always greeted us with a big hug. Passed at an early age, the world lost an Angel!
She was related to the Weiser’s.

I 'll tell him tomorrow sometime . I knew a few of the Wiesers but not Snooks. My Dad would have known her. His name was Jim.
