It is a great & good thing to see both sides on an issue.
The not so great a thing when we see both side of an issue from only one side at a time from people who only see one side of an issue.
Like it is a winner take all issue.
Now I don't think that is how most of us really think on issues but why to we do it?

...Fear. Look at situations where the Police have obtained coerced testimony. In spite of what we know and don't know we can strongly believe in anything despite the facts.

I would not use the word believe. I say we should have doubts about those sort of things.
But you are right people seem to want to believe what ever they want.
